LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN ENGLISH 8

Worksheet No. 6 Quarter 3

Learner’s Name:
Grade Level/Section:
Date:

I. LEARNING SKILLS
A. Most Essential Learning Competency
Use appropriate cohesive devices in various types of speech.

B. Objectives
Identify the different types of speech.
Use appropriate cohesive devices in various types of speech.

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

One of the most important things a speaker should know is the different types of
speech. This is to make sure that he can deliver speeches with different purposes. In
this lesson, you will learn about various types of speeches.

Speech is a form of communication in spoken language, made by a speaker

before an audience for a given purpose. Speakers use a variety of speech depending
on their objective. Now, we are going to learn more about the different types of speech
according to purpose.

INFORMATIVE SPEECH
An informative speech is one in which the speaker relays knowledge to an
audience on a specific topic. There are four distinct categories of topic: things, people,
or places, methods, events, ideas

PERSUASIVE SPEECH

A persuasive speech is a specific type of speech in which the speaker has a goal
of convincing the audience to accept his or her point of view. The speech is arranged in
such a way as to hopefully cause the audience to accept all or part of the expressed
view audience.

ENTERTAINING SPEECH
The primary purpose of a speech to entertain is to have the audience relax, smile
and enjoy the occasion. The speech should have a central theme or a focus.

Aside from its purpose, speeches also vary according to how they are being
delivered. Here are the different types of speeches according to delivery.
MANUSCRIPT SPEECH
Manuscript speech is done by word-for-word iteration of a written message. In a
manuscript speech, the speaker maintains his or her attention on the printed page
except when using visual aids.

MEMORIZED SPEECH
Memorized speech uses the rote recitation of a written message that the speaker has
committed to memory. Actors, of course, recite from memory whenever they perform
from a script in a stage play, television program, or movie scene. When it comes to
speeches, memorization can be useful when the message needs to be exact and the
speaker doesn’t want to be confined by notes.

EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH
Extemporaneous speech is done by presenting a carefully planned and rehearsed
speech, spoken in a conversational manner using brief notes. By using notes rather
than a full manuscript, the extemporaneous speaker can establish and maintain eye
contact with the audience and assess how well they are understanding the speech as it
progresses.

IMPROMPTU SPEECH
Impromptu speeches often occur when someone is asked to “say a few words” or give a
toast on a special occasion. Impromptu speaking is the presentation of a short message
without advance preparation.

III. ACTIVITIES
This time, you are now going to apply everything that you’ve learned about the
different types of speeches according to purpose and delivery.

A. Practice Tasks
TASK 1
Directions: Identify the type of speech being described below.
1. When speaking, the speaker is expected to be friendly and relaxed, but still
courteous during the speech delivery. Moreover, the speaker should know the
audience well in order to effectively deliver the speech.

2. In delivering this type of speech, your primary goal is to influence the thoughts,
feelings, actions, and behaviors or attitudes of your listeners. Likewise, you also
aim to change their perception and convince them that your argument is more
important, practical, attainable, or feasible.

3. Since this type of speech follows a word-for-word method, you might be tempted
to skip practicing the speech.
4. Impromptu speeches are delivered with little or no time for preparation. In most
instances,
A speaker is called to speak at the spur of the moment because he or she is
expected to be knowledgeable about the subject.

5. It is a planned and prepared speech which is delivered with the help of short
notes and a clear outline.

TASK 2
Directions: Read and identify the type of speech given below.

1. My own first personal memory of war was in 1968. As a 16-year-old dishwasher

in a small diner in upstate New York, I watched a Vietnam veteran get off the
bus, coming back from his first tour of duty in Vietnam, to be met by his
family. And at a time in our history when heroes were hard to find, I thought I’d
found one. I’d never seen anybody so handsome, so physical, so determined, so
proud. Captain John Graham – Captain John Graham was his name. And he is a
big part of the reason I went to West Point.
Remarks at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial
General Martin E. Dempsey

2. Since 2010, the number of international tourists has grown three-fold from 5
million to more than 15 million in 2018. In 2018, international arrivals to Vietnam
reached 15.5 million, up 2.7 million compared to 2017, while domestic tourists
grew by 6.8 million compared to 2017, to an estimated 80 million in 2018. Visitors
coming by airways increased by 14.4 percent in 2018, while arrivals by road
increased by almost 60 percent, and by seaway decreased by 16.8 percent.

3. If we continue, there will be no doubt in my mind and in the mind of the world that
we have no honorable intentions in Vietnam. If we do not stop our war against
the people of Vietnam immediately, the world will be left with no other alternative
than to see this as ome horrible, clumsy, and deadly game we have decided to
play. The world now demands a maturity of America that we may not be able to
achieve. It demands that we admit that we have been wrong from the beginning
of our adventure in Vietnam, that we have been detrimental to the life of the
Vietnamese people. The situation is one in which we must be ready to turn
sharply from our present ways. In order to atone for our sins and errors in
Vietnam, we should take the initiative in bringing a halt to this tragic war.

Martin Luther King Jr
4. On behalf of the Government of Vietnam, I would like to convey my warmest
welcome to all distinguished delegates and guests attending the Vietnam
Business Summit on the occasion of the 2017 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week.
May I extend my warmest greetings to all distinguished guests and delegations,
representatives from organizations and enterprises, experts and investors
Vietnamese and international alike.
Speech at Vietnam Business Summit 2017
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc

5. The COVID-19 pandemic, which broke out and quickly became widespread from
the beginning of this year, has swept away the achievements that humankind
had accumulated for years, deprived and threatened the lives of millions. A World
Bank report on 8 June projected that the global economy would experience a
serious decline with a 5.2 percent contraction in global GDP. Per-capita income
would drop by 3.6%. Seventy to a hundred million people would fall into extreme
poverty, and the risk of social instability would mount. More than 40% of all
manufacturing industries and business sectors across countries are being
directly affected by lockdown and restrictions imposed for disease control.
