Introductory Message
Welcome to Environmental Science

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts

of the Schools Division of Himamaylan and DepEd Regional Office VI -
Western Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division
(CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers,
parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set
by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional

materials aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own
pace and time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will
also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and
attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Environmental Science Activity Sheet will help you facilitate

the leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you
and learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Environmental Science Activity Sheet is developed to help

you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material
provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent
learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the
instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This
will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Food Chain and Food Web
I. Learning Competency with Code

 Trace the flow of energy in a food chain, and food pyramid.

II. Background Information for Learners

Life is all about survival. All living things, big or small require energy
in one form or another. Energy comes into the living world in the form of
sunlight. Living organisms would not be able to make macromolecules
(proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and complex carbohydrates) without a
constant energy input. Green plants and photosynthetic organisms trap this
energy and store it in the form of chemical energy of food.

Food consists of nutrients of chemical substances which serve as

sources of energy and building materials of an organism. Food is passed on
from the producers to various consumers. This process of eating and being
eaten is called food chain.

A food chain is a linear sequence of organisms “who eats whom”

through which nutrients and energy pass through the primary producers,
primary consumers, and higher-level consumers. There is a single path
through the chain. Each organism in a food chain occupies what is called a
trophic level.

1. Sample Food Chain
https://freesvg.org/orca- silhouette

The bottom of the food chain consists of photosynthetic organisms

(plants and/or phytoplankton), which are called primary producers. The
organisms that consume the primary producers are herbivores - the
primary consumers. Secondary consumers are usually carnivores that eat
the primary consumers. Tertiary consumers are carnivores that eat other
carnivores and so on, up to the organisms at the top of the food chain.

In nature, the food relationship among living things is not as simple as

what is shown in Figure 1. A food chain may link with other food chains
since that an organism may be eaten by more than one consumer. At the same
time, a consumer depends on more than one organism for food. This complex
pattern of relationships where several food chains are interlinked or

1
interconnected is known as food web.

In this learning activity, you will learn how organisms acquire energy
and how that energy is passed from one organism to another through food
webs and their constituent food chains.

IV. Activity Proper

Activity 1: Getting Started with Food Chains
Directions: Analyze the given food chain below and answer the questions
that follow. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

Questions:
1. What organism is the producer in the food chain?

2. What do the arrows represent?

3. What organism is the primary consumer in the food chain?

4. What is the primary source of energy that drives the food chain?

5. What will happen if you remove Organism 1 in the food chain?

2
Activity 2: Getting Started with Food Webs

Directions: Study the given food chains below. Use the food chains to
help you draw the arrows on the food web and answer the questions that
follow. One arrow has been drawn for you.
Write your answers in a separate sheet of paper.
1. Grass  Sparrow  Snake
2. Grass  rabbit  fox
3. Grass  slug  fox
4. Grass  rabbit  snake
5. Grass  slug  frog  snake
