CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Conflict can be defined as the lack of peace in an

environment or the disagreement between people, group, that

result in often angry argument. Conflict in a family refers to a

situation whereby the smooth interaction and relation among

members of a family is disrupted because of one thing or another.

It can be a result between the parents and their children.

Conflict in a family can be a result of lack of trust,

drunkenness, and lack of dialogue, lack of respect, joblessness

and the financial problem and children rivalry.

Financial problem and joblessness are the main cause of

family conflict. Failure to secure a good job that earns the

bread winner, significant income to pay for bills, tuition pay of

a child, pay for rent, buy food and fund recreation activities

for the family members is the main cause of family conflict.

Apart from finances and job, family conflict could arise from

sibling rivalry. Sibling will naturally compete with one another

for parental approval or attention. Such competition may involves

causing harms to the others, teasing one another or tattling on.

Either of such practices will eventually result in conflict among

the siblings especially where the parents just not intervene and

uphold quality among siblings through showing equal love and

2

acceptance for all. Conflict in a family have a negative effect

to the child, it can lead her/his to have an emotional and

behavioural problem. If both parents are fighting and arguing,

the child feeling threatened and fearful that the family would

split up and the child is more likely experience emotional

problem such as depression and turns into societal point. Also,

having a family conflict the students will lead to be

traumatized, become aggressive and to become rebellious, such as

taking drugs, drinking alcohol, taking cigarette, marijuana and

many others, that may contribute to have the students a poor

academic performance because of not paying attention and no

focused on his/her academic works, doing cutting classes may

affects his/her grades in school.

According to the study of Maina Irene Wanjinko entitled

‘’Impact of Family Conflict on Academic Performance and

Interpersonal Relationship of Public Primary School on Nakaru

Municipality’’ parents play a central role in shaping conflicts

development through their influence. Thus, if parents keep having

conflict in their home children are bound to be affected as they

grow up. They also asserted that children learn through imitating

and identification with the parents and other significant adults.

If the children grow up in a family where a violence is a common

phenomenon, they may end up doing the same in their families,

unless intervention is carried out.

3

This is why researchers believed that family conflict

is need to be study because this is the common issue that is

being encountered by some students in Las Navas National

Highschool. In studying this, the researchers will give some

information to those students who are experiencing family

conflict and so that they can able to know how destructible

family conflict is, specifically on his/her psychological and

emotional behaviour that may effect on his/her academic

performance. Aside from that the researchers also can help

students to minimize the effect of family conflict to the student

academic performance. In addition, through studying this issues

the researchers also can help the teachers and guidance

councillor to give some information to them on how they intervene

those students who are affected of family conflict.

Statement of the Problem

Family Conflict is very common and unavoidable

especially when there is a financial problem and sibling rivalry.

When families are in conflict it affects the child on his/her

psychological and emotional behaviour.

Generally, this study aims to investigate the Effect of

Family Conflict on Academic Performance of Senior Highschool

Students in Las Navas National Highschool; specifically, this

will find to the following question;

4

7

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study investigated the Effect of Family Conflict on

Academic Performance of Senior Highschool Students in Las Navas

National Highschool. The profile of the senior high students in

terms of age, sex, grade level, grades in first semester, and

their socioeconomic income will be described.

This study is limited only to all grade 11 and 12

students of Las Navas National Highschool who are enrolled this

school year 2019 – 2020.

Theoretical Framework

This study was guided by the following theories;

Erickson’s theory, Behavioural and Abraham Maslow’s theory on

hierarchy of need.

Erickson’s theory is divided into various stages based

on child’s age; the first stage is trust versus mistrust. Many

problems experienced in this stage like lack of food could lead

to insecurity and hostility .The second stage is autonomy versus

shame/doubt. When pupil’s needs at this level are not met, they
8

are likely to shift into great shame and doubt. The third stage

which is between 2-6 years is initiative versus guilt. Here the

pupil’s create their social world. Failure to meet their demands

leads to development of an inner sense of guilt hampering the

normal social development process and this may result into build

up anxiety .The fourth stage is industry versus inferiority .This

is between 6-12 years and during these years; pupil have task of

facing and meeting the family, peer and school expectations.

Problem of this stage include; feelings of inadequacy, poor self-

image, fear of school, lack of concentration, poor memory,

excessive competition, expressing anger and sexual disadvantage.

In this study, pupil in home where there is conflict will have

lack of trust towards their parents because those parents are not

providing basic needs for them. They will also be very ashamed of

their background or family set up because of the problem on those

families. Some of pupils feels guilty and think that they are the

reason why their parents are fighting. Such feeling of guilt and

low of self-esteem lead to inferiority complex, which lead to

poor academic performance and poor interpersonal relationship

with peers.

Moreover, the Behavioural Theory proposed by Pavlov

holds the view that the person is the product of his/her

environment whereas the radical behaviourists such as skinner

ruled out the possibility of self-determination and freedom.

Behaviour modification aims to increase a person’s skills so that

9

the number of the response options is increased by overcoming

disturbing behaviour that restrict choices. Bandura (1997)

supports the belief that pupils learn their behaviour from others

whom they with through observation or modelling. He believed that

the mind, behaviour and the environment all play an important

role in the learning process. Pupils model parents, peers,

siblings, authority figures, teachers and others, whom they

admire and trust. In this study, the environment where pupils

grow up shapes their future: Pupils who grow up in an environment

full of conflicts between their parents will exhibit different

behaviours as compared to those who have grown up in a peaceful

environment. Each pupils who observes or witnesses conflict or

violence is bound to produce coping mechanism. It is these

mechanism that will affect the students’ academic performance.

Furthermore, this study was guided by Abraham Maslow’s

theory on hierarchy of needs. Maslow (1970) focuses on self-

actualized person include tolerance, welcoming uncertainty

acceptance of self and other, sense of humour and directedness.

He divided human need into five categories. The most basic

category is the physiological basic needs. These include food,

shelter, clothing and education. When pupil lack this basic need,

they cannot grow and their concentration is on discomfort. If

pupils is hurt by conflict in the family, they may not acquire

all the needs. After the basic needs, a person yearns for safety

needs .This is the need to feel secure. Pupils who witness their
10

parent lighting all the time do not fell in that home. There is

the fear that the parents might separate or even hurt them.

Maslow also talked about the belonging needs. This refers to the

need to be accepted and to affiliate with others. If pupils are

communicating well with parents, they will accepted .Pupils are

bound to think that they are not loved. Esteem needs come forth

on the hierarchy. This need make one gain approval to others.

When a couples is fighting, they cannot gain approval from the

pupils and other society member. Therefore this needs is not

fulfilled. The highest need makes on the hierarchy is self-

actualization. This needs make one feel self-fulfilled, and

realize one’s potential. If all other needs are not fulfilled,

one cannot reach the stage of self-actualization. It all start at

the psychological needs. Psychological needs can be fully and

satisfactorily met in a loving family without any conflicts.

Conceptual Framework

The model below shows the relationship between family

conflict and how it can affect to student academic performance.

In the context of this study, the independent variable is the

family conflict while the dependent variables is the academic

performance of the students.

As a result of experiencing conflict at home student

academic performance in school might be affected.

Review of Literature

Related Literature

The study of “Impact of Family Conflicts on the

Academic Performance and Interpersonal Relationships of the

Students” by Maina Irene Wajinko stated that, today’s families

experience problem like unfaithfulness, violence, child

molestation and separation. These problem experienced in families

affect the students in those families. The study indicate that

both students and teachers agreed to the fact that family

conflict affected cognitive and effective growth. There was low

class concentration if parents or guardians were fighting,

15

because the students were always thinking about the happening at

home. It was also established that a majority of students did not

share with their peers when their parents or guardian were

quarrelling. More female students were exposed to violence or

abuse than the male. The study also revealed that student who

came from families where there was conflict. Did not relate well

with their teachers. The study also revealed that in most schools

there were counsellor from whom students experiencing problems

could seek assistance.

Involving parents in learning activities with their

offspring at home is one kind of parental involvement that many

educators believe is an important aspect of the students learning

If the family is undergoing conflict, parents will not have time

for them. Men, who more often use violence, do so in order to

obtain and maintain power and control over others. This will

encourage such parents to embrace dialogue and understanding in

an effort of trying to solve their problem. In instance where the

problems are severe, they can engage the service of a counsellor

so that harmony prevails. It will also contribute to the body of

literature on family conflicts and its influence on a primary

student academic performance and interpersonal skills. They can

able to find the other intervention measures to students who come

from families that experience conflict in an effort to help them

concentrate on their studies and build good relationships with

the students. It may be useful to teachers especially because

16

they spend more time with the students at school, they can

intervene by referring students to the school counsellor or by

calling the parents of the students and discussing the students

behaviour and academic performance.

The researchers found that the impact of family

conflict between parents on their behaviour and mental health is

driven by how the children understand the problem in the

relationship as well as the nature of conflict itself.

Professor Harold said, children exposed to everyday conflicts

between their parents, conflicts that are non-violent but

frequent intense and poorly resolved are at elevated risk for

mental health problem even when people consider poor parenting

practice to children in explaining the effect of hostile

relationship on children.

Importantly, children may not actually be responsible

for their parent relationship problems. Rather they simply need

to feel or perceive that they are responsible in order to

experience negative psychological outcomes, said professor

Harold.

It has been found out that parental involvement in a

child might have lasting effect on its behaviour. Steinberg.

(1996) assets that conflict is a critical aspect of family

functioning that often outweighs the influence of family

structure on the child’s development.

17

Moreover, recent findings from south wales, family study

suggest that the quality of relation between parents not only

affects children long term emotional and behavioural development

but also affects their long term academic achievement. Dr. Harold

said, a family environment marked by frequent, intense and poorly

resolved conflict between parents are at risk for deficits in

academic achievement than children living in more positive family

environment.

Furthermore, Murphy and O’ Farell (1994) highlighted the

view that parents play a central role in shaping the child’s

development through their influence. Thus, if parents keep having

conflicts in their homes, children are bound to be affected as

they grow up. They also asserted that children learn through

imitating and identification with parents and others significant

adults. If the children grow up in a family where violence is a

common phenomenon, they may end up doing the same in their

families unless intervension is carried out.

Related Studies

The study of “Impact of Family Conflict on Academics

Performance and Interpersonal Relationship of Pupil in Public

Primary School” by Maina Irene Wajinko that conducted in Nakaru

municipality with has a population of 2,023pupils and there were

899 boys and 1,124 girls of respondents in the ten schools. The

study employed the descriptive survey research design to

determine the influence of family conflict on academic

18

performance and interpersonal relationship of the pupils under

study. The findings of the study indicated that both pupils and

teachers agreed to the fact that family conflicts affected a

pupil’s cognitive and effective growth. There was a low class

concentration if parents or guardian were fighting because the

pupils were always thinking about the happenings at home. It was

also established that a majority of pupils did not share with

their peers were exposed to violence or an abuse than mate. The

study also revealed that pupils who came from families where

there was a conflict did not relate well with their teacher. The

study also revealed that in most school there were counsellor

from whom pupils experiencing problem seek assistance.

The study of Maina Irene Wajinku and the present study is differ

in terms of the locale of the study, respondent and research

design. The present study was conducted at Las Navas National

Highschool and employed descriptive correlational design while

the past study employed descriptive survey research and it was

conducted at Nakaru municipality.

The study of past and present study have common

similarity because they only focused on the effect family

conflict on academic performance.

The study of “Work Family Conflict and Individual

consequences” by Mian Zhang, Rodger W. Griffeth and David D.

fried that was conducted in china with has a number 264 total

population were the manager are their respondent based on this

19

findings that work family conflict was positively associated with

emotional exhaustion. Family work conflict was negatively

associated with life satisfaction and effective commitment as

well as positively related to turnover intentions. Contrary to

the research with sample of worker from western countries, the

study found that family work conflict was positively associated

with affective commitment and did not associate with turnover

intention for Chinese manager.

The past study is differ to the present study because

past study was conducted in china while the present study was

conducted in Las Navas National Highschool. And past study and

the present is study is differ because the respondents of the

past study are the Chinese manager while the present study are

the students of Las Navas Northern Samar.

Both past and present study are focusing on the effect of

conflict to the life of the person.

The study of “Family Problems Experienced by the

Students” by professor Mohammad Amin of educational

administration and assets department faculty of educational

science university of Jordan stated that family is the influences

in the lives of individuals because it is the first group that is

with a direct impact on them, through which the individual

acquire the experience and knowledge through the behaviours

practiced and observed by him, and through interactive family

relations among its member. Many of the attitude and actions and
20

action, positive or negative issued by the parties may be

profound effect on the other parties. The family has a profound

impact on the students or children behaviour, attitudes and

maturity through experienced in which they live and through the

family relationship. Family stability plays an important role in

developing the capacity of the individual, the right atmosphere

achieves most important psychological and social development

demands because the individuals in such as at atmosphere learns

the social interactions, participation in everyday life as well

as the personal independence.

The past study of Professor Mohammad Amin and the

present study have difference when it comes to the respondent and

the locale of the study also the past study of professor Amin and

the present study have similarities with regards to the effect

of family conflicts to students performance.
