1.0 Introduction
Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) is a state corporation established under the Railway Art
No.10 of 2017 with the core mandate of providing an efficient and effective rail transport
services, manage and develop rail infrastructure and ensuring safety and security in Tanzania
mainland.

1.1 Historical background of Tanzania Railways Corporation

Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) can be traced back from 1948 after the establishment of
East Africa Railways and Harbors Corporation ( EARH& H). East Africa Railways and Harbors
Corporation ( EARH& H) was defunct company that operated railways and harbor in East Africa
from 1948 to 1977. It was formed in 1948 for the new East African High Commission by
merging the Kenya and Uganda Railways and Harbors with the Tanganyika Railways of the
Tanganyika territory. As well as running railways and harbors in the three territories it ran inland
shipping services on Lake Victoria, Lake K yoga, Albert and the Victoria Nile and Albert Nile.
When the East African Railways and Harbors Corporation was dissolved in 1997 and its assets
divided between Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Tanzania Railways Corporation was formed to
take over its operations in Tanzania.
After the long process, on 6 march 2006 RITES company won the lender Tanzania Railways
Limited ( TRL) and Rail Assets Holding Company ( RAHCO) were established, RITES of India
were given a contract to operate Rail transport services for 25 years from 1st October 2007,RITES
owned 51% and Tanzania Government owned 49% of the salaries. There were moves to abandon
the contract due to the fact that the Indian investors (RITES) failed to meet the contract
conditions, in 2010 the government terminated the contract and resumed control and from 22nd of
July 2011 Tanzania Railways Limited ( TRL) was fully owned by the Government of United
Republic of Tanzania at 100% shares.
Reformation of Tanzania Railways Corporation in 2017 the parliament of the United Republic of
Tanzania passed the bill of Railway Act for the merging of Tanzania Railways Limited ( TRL)
and Rail Assets Holding Company ( RAHCO) to establish Tanzania Railways Corporation under
the new Railway Act.

CHAPTER TWO
2.1 BRIEF OVERVIEW OF FIELD PRACTICAL TRAINING
During the field training I was working under operation department and department divided
into two parts first part it know as control office this part it concerned about the control train
from. Railway transport sector is partly determined by amount of passengers and cargo
transported over a defined period of time. The higher the amount of cargo and passengers
transported, the higher the revenue earned hence high profitability of Railway Company. This
specific objective was set up in order to guide the study to assess the actual needs of cargo
transportation through central railway line managed by TRC.
It was not possible to get a straight forward figure of cargo that needs to be transported by central
railway line. But it was possible to get an estimate through assessing the actual capacity of TRL
to transport cargo to both domestic and international destinations. In the last five years, 2010 to
2014, TRC transported a total of 1.065 million tons of cargo to both domestic and international
destinations. This was reported by TRC Manager to be under TRL capacity. It was just 45 per
cent of full capacity.
Transporting freight by train can be really economical under the right circumstances. They are
also an energy-efficient option than by road. They can carry a lot of bulk over large distances
quicker than trucks and aren’t that suited to short-distance travel. The biggest disadvantage to
freight trains is the lack of flexibility since they can only go one specific route that the rails are
built on. By road, you can reach more inaccessible and remote areas.

2.2 ACTIVITIES PERFORMED DURING INDUSTRIAL PRACTICAL TRAINING

During the field practices at TRC Tanga station I had been assigned various task and duties of
which some to be accomplished on time. Among the task and duties performed in our fieldwork
practical training at TRC Tanga station are;
station master

At TRC Tanga I learned the responsibilities of station master which by then I performed those
duties and responsibilities as station master at Tanga station

Station Controller

Station Controller is the one who all train from one station to another. Following the duties I
was assigned to control all train from Tanga to Arusha station I also had to inform the station
master the movement of train at the station on time located.

Point’s inspection and set up

Is among of the crucial duties which we performed in a definite manner points are responsible
for directing and controlling the movement of trains. Normal locomotive had no ability to give
its self direction compare to other carrying unit of transport like lorry, buses, ships, cars,
airplanes and other carrying units. So points are the mains responsible for control the
locomotive. I conducted inspection and set up points for the proper movement of trains and
locomotive under friendly supervision of point’s man.

Fuel filling.

also under Mechanical department I was able to perform the task of filling the fuel. Normal
locomotive fuel are filled when reached 500litres or below that. Locomotive uses the hard fuel
which is diesel compared to other carrying unit like lorry, cars, buses which normally uses petrol
in its operation. When the locomotive driver needed the fuel then he is supposed to record the
fuel amount filled and he/she supposed to do the same when finished.

Filling the goods balance sheet

Also when practice my field we learned on how to fill the goods balance sheet at Tanga station
under the instructions of station master. When you fill goods balance sheet you want to be
careful to avoid error and mistake which can lead to wrong details.

Coupling male and female buffer.

During the industrial practical training at TRC Tanga I got a chance of learning on how to
couple male and female buffer and be kept in practices. This is one among of the interesting and
also difficult duty it is interesting because it make a person be more careful and it is difficult
since it needs power when couple male and female buffer. Female and male buffer are hoes pipe
which can pass air from one wagon to another for the purpose of break.

Wagons and Locomotive repairing,

Wagons are the special space or carrier for passenger and goods. The wagons are un powered
which are connected into series. And locomotives mean the powered part which used to runs the
wagons. The interconnection of wagons and locomotives final made up trains. So I was
sometimes assigned on repairing wagons for the better efficient of trains.

2.3. Problems faced during the field practices at TRC Tanga.

 Lack of enough workers in some departments which caused lack of necessary
information for easy performance of given task and duties.
 Lack of motivation.

2.4 Solutions of the problem faced

 There should be employed more worker so as to reduce the extremely busy in
organization, since there are lower number of employees compared to the
capacity of duties that they supposed to be conducted in their day to day
activities.
 There should be provision of motivation such as transport money, breakfasts or
lunch so as to make training effectively and efficiently.

2.5 General observation

Generally during this field practical training I observed that the work environment at the
Tanzania Railway Corporation Tanga is not much good, (starting from lower level employees up
to higher level) offices are quiet old. Also the employees were complaining that they were not
getting their overtime payment on time. There is also problem of old tools and equipment used
in the operations, and there is insufficient employees.

CHAPTER THREE
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
3.1.CONCLUSION.
During my practical training I learn a lot of thing concerning my course study, I learn also how
to work with different people in an organization by cooperation. Apart from that I enjoyed a lot
both practical works assigned to me because they made me become confident and familiar
mostly to all operation involved at station.
Through this practices I come to realize that the concepts taught in the class is reflecting what is
being practices in the real field, but what is needed is the experience of the concepts and other
related issues.
I also gained the knowledge how to work efficient with less effort and proper care to avoid
accident and develop worker relationship. The station I visit gave me a chance to experience and
learn what cannot gained during lectures. One of the first things that I have learn is
understanding the importance of safety because of dangerous equipment exist at station
Finally, all these features of an organization has really added some good qualities in
me.Therefore the field training was very helpful for my academic and future life and helped
better understanding what I am going to face in future as a transport officer

3.2 RECOMMENDATIONS
After the whole field practical training period at TRC Tanga I here by recommend some sorts of
things for the better work and efficiencies of Tanzania Railways Corporation.
Tanzania Railway Corporation as the old corporation within country should conduct the
following so as to improve the organization efficiently;
 The renovation of the buildings which they have, by repairing and coloring again.
 Buying new vehicles, in order to support the existing equipment so as to simplify
work and to minimize costs and time.
 To conduct training to their staff especially to the new technology equipment
