Problem Set 2

This document contains 4 problems related to heat conduction through cylindrical and spherical systems. Problem 1 asks to determine the heat flow through a spherical boiler wall with layers of steel and asbestos insulation. Problem 2 asks to determine the heat flow into a spherical container insulated by a temperature-dependent material. Problem 3 asks to determine the interface temperature between layers of magnesium and fiberglass pipe insulation. Problem 4 asks to calculate the heat loss per unit area and interface temperature for a steam pipe insulated in layers.

PROBLEM SET 2
Conduction through Cylindrical and Spherical Systems

1. Determine the rate of heat flow through a spherical boiler wall which is 2 m in diameter and 2 cm
thick steel (k = 58 W/m-K). The outside surface of boiler wall is covered with asbestos (k = 0.116
W/m-K) 5 mm thick. The temperature of the outer surface and that of fluid inside are 50 °C and
300°C respectively. Take inner film resistance as 0.0023 K/W.
2. A spherical container having outer diameter 500 mm is insulated by 100 mm thick layer of material
with thermal conductivity k =0.03 ( 1+0.006 t ) W /m ° C . If the surface temperature of sphere is -
200°C and temperature of outer surface is 30°C, determine the heat flow in.
3. Two layers of insulation cover a cast iron pipe of 5 cm outside diameter. The inner layer is 8 cm thick
magnesium insulation k =0.02 W /mK followed by 30 cm layer of fiber glass insulation
k =0.05 W /mK . If the inside temperature of the pipe is 120°C and the outside insulation
temperature is 27°C, determine the temperature at the interface between the fiber glass and
magnesium insulation.
4. A steam pipe 300 m long and 280 mm outside diameter is covered with 60 mm insulation
k =0.076 W /mK followed by 40 mm insulation k =0.82 W /mK . The temperature difference
between the inner and outer surface is 350°C. Calculate:
a. The heat loss per square meter of outer surface.
b. The heat loss per square meter of pipe surface.
c. The temperature between the two layers of insulation.
