Science and technology are an integral part of our lives. In this course, we will be able to
learn the relevance of science and
technology to society. It includes the revolution of various inventions in the world. In
connection, I would like you to answer the following questions given below.
1.) Give three examples of ancient and modern technologies, including who invented them
and when.
Ancient Technologies
- Steam Engine - Heron Alexandrinus invented the steam engine in 1st century Greece. It was
forgotten until Taqu al-Din reinvented it in 1577.
- Central Heating- From 1000 BC, the ancient Romans used a system known as a hypocaust to
provide central heating. A similar system was in use in ancient Korea. It was dubbed an ondol.
The technology was lost until the late 1850s, when Franz San Galli invented the radiator.
Modern Technologies
- Mobile phones - The concept of cellular phone service dates back to at least 1947, but the first
call was made from the sidewalk outside the Manhattan Hilton in 1973 by Martin Cooper, a
Motorola researcher who dialed up his rival at AT&T Bell Labs to test the new phone. Thirty
years later, more than half of all Americans own one, and cellular networks are starting to
provide broadband Internet access over the air.
- Electronic funds transfer- In 1972, the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank established a
paperless transfer system with the Los Angeles branch. By the end of the decade, instantaneous
transfers of millions of dollars in value between banks, insurance companies, and other financial
institutions had become common. The real appeal of EFT today is that it allows you to withdraw
money from your bank account from anywhere in the world and use PayPal to buy and sell items
on eBay without sending money or checks through the mail.
- Robots and artificial intelligence - The term "robot" was coined in 1920 by Czechoslovakian
playwright Karel Capek — "robota" is a Czech word for tedious labor — but George Devol built
the first real industrial robot in 1954. Five years later, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
established the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in an effort to mechanically mimic both human
minds and hands. Today, robots assemble products better, faster, and often cheaper than manual
laborers, and advanced software helps schedule, guide, and fly more than 8 million US airline
flights each year.
2.) Name three Filipino inventors or scientists, as well as their inventions.
- Paulo Campos
Paulo Campos built the first radioisotope laboratory in the Philippines.
- Francisco Fronda
Francisco Fronda is know as the Father of poultry science in the Philippines.
- Roberto Del Rosario - Filipino Inventor
Roberto Del Rosario is the inventor of the Karaoke Sing Along System.
3.) What would you invent if you could create a new technology that would improve your
life, and why?
- If I could invent a new technology, it would be a time machine because I believe that when
you're stressed out by life, you should be able to take a break and recharge before facing reality
and making better decisions for yourself and your loved ones such as family, friends, and
significant others.
