Northern Philippines

1) A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the northern Philippines on July 27th, 2022, with its epicenter located near Abra province. 2) The earthquake was felt as far as 300km away in Manila and was generated by movement along the active Abra River Fault. 3) Over 100 people were injured and buildings were damaged, especially in Abra where 80% of the population was affected.

The ground shaking was felt at PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS) VII
(destructive) in Abra and as far as Camarines Sur at PEIS I (scarcely perceptible). Based on
the location and focal mechanism, the earthquake was generated by the Abra River Fault
with an oblique slip.
Science and Technology Undersecretary Renato Solidum Jr. on Wednesday, July 27,
said the major 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Abra was most likely generated by the
movement along the Abra River Fault—an active fault, which last moved in 1868. Solidum,
who is also the OIC of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs),
pointed out that faults usually take “several hundred years” before it could produce a
powerful earthquake. Solidum said that the 7.0-magnitude tremor is so far the “strongest
on-land earthquake” since the 6.6-magnitude Masbate quake in August 2020.(Solidum
Renato Jr.,2022)

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake killed at least five people in the northern

Philippines toppling buildings and shaking high-rise towers more than 300 kilometers
(185 miles) away in the capital Manila. The provincial government said that based on
initial reports, 80% of Abra’s population was affected by the earthquake. It also warned that
it months. The shallow and powerful quake struck the mountainous and lightly
populated province of Abra on the main island of Luzon at 8:43 am local time, the US
Geological Survey said.Shallow earthquakes tend to cause more damage than deeper
ones. This one left more than a hundred people injured across the hilly region,
triggered dozens of landslides, damaged buildings, and knocked out power.
The focal mechanism solution for the mainshock, also known as a beach ball
diagram that shows scientists the possible motion and orientation of faults during an
earthquake, consists of two reverse faults. One strikes 233°, or northeast-southwest,
with a relatively steep dip of 69°, and the other strikes 8°, or roughly north-south,
with a shallower dip of 28°. (PHIVOLCS Earthquake Data, 2022). The earthquake had
to have been caused by a fault oriented in either of these directions. The Abra River
Fault has been identified as the structure responsible by PHIVOLCS (PHIVOLCS Poster,
2022). Given its relatively large magnitude and shallow depth, the responsible fault
should have reached the surface, rupturing the ground. However, two weeks after
the earthquake, no surface ground rupture has been found.(teblor.net,2022)
