Lesson 3 Inclusive Education In the Philippines

Activity No. 1- WHAT’S IN YOUR MIND!

Direction: Answer the following questions.

1. What is inclusive education?

Ans: Inclusive education means different and diverse students learning side by
side in the same classroom. They enjoy field trips and after-school activities
together. They participate in student government together. And they attend the
same sports meets and plays. Inclusive education values diversity and the unique
contributions each student brings to the classroom. In a truly inclusive setting,
every child feels safe and has a sense of belonging. Students and their parents
participate in setting learning goals and take part in decisions that affect them. And
school staff have the training, support, flexibility, and resources to nurture,
encourage, and respond to the needs of all students.
2. Why is inclusive education important?
Ans: Inclusive education provide a better quality education for all children and are
instrumental in changing discriminatory attitudes. Schools provide the context for
a child’s first relationship with the world outside their families, enabling the
development of social relationships and interactions. Respect and understanding
grow when students of diverse abilities and backgrounds play, socialize, and learn
together. Education that excludes and segregates perpetuates discrimination
against traditionally marginalized groups. When education is more inclusive, so
are concepts of civic participation, employment, and community life.

3. What is the difference between partial inclusion and full inclusion?

Ans: Full inclusion is when all of a student's core subjects are taught in an inclusion
classroom and he/she also receives help in a resource class. Partial inclusion is
when only some of the core classes are inclusion classes and a student has
resource for only one class period a day instead of two (in a regular, 6 class-per
day schedule.) If a student is in a separate classroom from the general education
students he/she is in self-contained special education. That is like the special
education class you think of when your think of sped classes.

Activity No. 2 –FILL ME UP!

Direction: Fill in the graphic organizer.

What are the salient features of inclusive education?

1. Intentional, sufficient, and supported interactions between peers with and without
disabilities.
2. Specialized, individualized supports

3. Family involvement

4. Inclusive, interdisciplinary services and collaborative teaming.

Activity No. 3: REFLECTION AND APPLICATION OF LEARNING
1. Recall and write short vignettes about persons with disabilities you know, have met
or heard about. How did they overcome their disabilities?

One of the major challenges people with disabilities face is the challenge in their
professional training and development. Disability may limit learning abilities of
individuals that prevent them from obtaining the target education and making a
successful career. In such a situation, disability may be a substantial obstacle on
the way to the professional development of individuals and to their career. On the
other hand, it is not the disability proper but the prejudice of employers that
becomes an obstacle on the way of people with disabilities. However, such
discrimination tends to disappear due to legal changes, including the
implementation of many laws that protects the people with disabilities.
Being with the shoes of the people with disabilities is not easy as we thought it
could be. I have a classmate before way back in high school, he cannot speak in
short he is a mute person. It is very hard for him to speak with us especially during
the oral recitation. As his classmate of course I respect him because I know how
hard his situation is. There are times that I make a bonding with him and he teaches
me on how to use the letters using my hands and luckily I learned. Unfortunately,
that guy didn’t continue his journey in schooling because maybe it is very difficult
for him to adjust to the people around him. Fortunately, I’m thankful that I have
once a friend that is strong, friendly, and believes that his situation is not a
hindrance to make and have friends. Anyway, that friend of mine overcome his
disabilities by the encouragement and help of his family, our teacher, his friends,
classmates, and of course me who always there for him in sadness and in laughers
because we are seatmates.
Lesson 4 Roles of Parents and Teachers in the Education of Learners With
Special Needs

Activity No. 1-ESSAY

1. What role do parents and teachers play in the overall development of a child
with special needs?
Ans: We all know that teachers and parents play a vital role in holistic
development of the child. Parents are the first mentor of the child and the
teacher is the second. Both of them have an immense contribution and
responsibility in shaping child’s personality. Moreover, Parents are the
child’s first role model. Children behave, react and imitate same as their
parents. Parents play important role in encouraging and motivating their
kids that has special needs to learn. Good parental support helps the child
to be positive, healthy and good life long learner. Children acquire skills at
the very early stage of their life if the parents are responsive and
understanding. In the other hand, the role of the teacher is to nurture
children’s learning and give him or her various experiences to face this
challenging world. The teacher molds the child to be a responsible and
independent learner. Teacher is the first person from whom child learns his
social skills in school. Teachers make special child comfortable and guide
him the early concepts and developmental skills of life. Open minded , well
balanced and a planned teacher has a great power to bring a positive
change in the child’s development. As the child grows and develops
mastery in different skills, teacher becomes a real guide in nurturing his
interest and learning to make him more independent.

2. Why teachers and parents should work together?

Ans: Parents and teachers should work together because they have a
common goal, that goal is to facilitate the best educational experience
possible for the child. In addition having a trrust and mutual understanding
between parent and teacher is a real secret of child’s happy learning.
Support and Cooperativeness from parents towards teacher helps a lot to
connect, understand and work towards child. Remarkable positive change
is seen in a child if the parents and teacher understand and work hand in
hand. A good parent teacher relationship leads child to be positive towards
attending school.

3. How does parental involvement affect a child's education?

Ans: Why do parents have to get involved in their child's education?
Basically, parents' involvement in their child's learning process offers many
opportunities for success. According to Centre for Child Well-Being (2010),
parental involvement in their children's learning not only improves a child's
moral, attitude, and academic achievement across all subject areas, but it
also promotes better behavior and social adjustment. It further says that
family involvement in education helps children to grow up to be productive,
responsible members of the society. This means that if we involve the
parents in educating their children, it is tantamount to saying that the school
is proactive in implementing changes or development among the students.
As parent's involvement is increased, teachers and school administrators
also raise the chance to realize quality reform in education.

Lesson 5 Individualized Education Plan

Activity No. 1- ON MY OWN

1. What is Individual Education Plan and its purpose?

Ans: An Individualized Education Plan or also known as an IEP. This is a plan
developed to ensure that a child with an identified disability who is attending an
elementary or secondary educational institution receives specialized instruction
and related services. The IEP is developed by a team of individuals from various
educational disciplines, the child with a disability, family members, and/or
designated advocates.
An IEP typically includes the following:
• The involvement and progress of the child with a disability in the general
curriculum.
• All related services for which the child qualifies.
• Appropriate educational accommodations necessary for the child to be
successful.
• The child's present levels of educational performance.
• Measurable annual goals and objectives for the child's education.

Moreover, the IEP creates an opportunity for teachers, parents, school

administrators, related services personnel, and students to work together to
improve educational results for children with disabilities. The IEP is the cornerstone
of a quality education for each child with a disability.

2. Why IEP is important for Special Education?

Ans: IEPs are important because of their holistic nature. IEPs are concerned with
achieving a clearer understanding of the entire child, including areas of strength.
There is sufficient space within an IEP to describe the child in detail, including likes,
dislikes, academic interests, family structure and extracurricular activities.
Additionally, IEPs are unique in that they do not only focus on academic growth.
Social-emotional goals such as recognizing or regulating emotions, building
empathy skills and building positive relationships with peers are equally as
important and often accompany academic goals. Moreover, the importance of an
IEP for special education includes measurable and specific goals. Goals that are
vague or too broad are difficult to track. Breaking down goals into smaller
components allows more opportunities for a child to reach those goals, which
allows the child a sense of accomplishment confidence.
