5 Solas Devotional Guide

Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany in 1517, sparking the Protestant Reformation. The Reformation impacted society in many ways - it broke down barriers between sacred and secular, promoted political equality and human rights, and economic and educational reforms. Spiritually, it returned the church's focus to the centrality of Scripture alone (Sola Scriptura) as the final authority, not tradition or church councils. This devotional guide will walk through each of the "5 solas" that emerged from the Reformation over 5 weeks.

Dear HBC Family,

On October 31, 1517, an Augustinian monk nailed to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany ‘Ninety-Five Theses’ (or
complaints) against abuses in the church of his day. His complaints, which were actually a call to reform the church, were quickly
copied and distributed, first throughout Germany, and then all of Europe. Unwittingly, Martin Luther (1483-1546) had started a
revolution, called the Protestant Reformation, which would forever alter the face of Western Civilization, and through it, the world.

The Reformation impacted all areas of life. Socially, it broke down the wall between the sacred and the secular, leading to a fresh
appreciation of the sanctity of marriage, family, and the ordinary tasks of life. Politically, it lead to the recognition of the essential
equality among all people, a recognition of basic human rights, and accordingly the creation of representative forms of government.
Economically, it promoted free-market economies and gave workers a new sense of dignity in their work. Educationally, it gave
impetus to universal literacy, as the common people learned to read the Bible for themselves. Spiritually, and most importantly, it
brought much needed reform to the church by returning the church to the Bible and recovering the gospel, which is captured in the
“5 solas” that emerged. Those “5 solas” include:

1 Sola Scriptura (“Scripture alone”): Scripture is our final authority, not amended or added to by tradition,
opinion, or church councils..
2 Sola Gratia (“grace alone”): We are justified through God’s kind, gracious, and free initiative. He gives us
what we don’t deserve and could never earn: forgiveness, transformation into Christ’s image, and adoption
into his family.
3 Sola Fide (“faith alone”): Our justification before God is by faith. God declares us righteous in his eyes not
because he sees righteousness in us but because we fully rest and trust in the work of Christ on the cross to
pay for our sins and because we receive his perfect righteousness as a gift.
4 Solus Christus (“Christ alone”): The basis of our forgiveness before God is Christ alone, not saints, Mary,
angels, or any other being. In his substitutionary sacrifice on the cross Jesus completely bore God’s righteous
wrath against us. His payment was full, final, and effective.
5 Soli Deo Gloria (“to the glory of God alone”): All of this is accomplished for God’s glory alone. For eternity,
praises will redound to the God whose wisdom, power, and love ordained that he would have a people
from every tribe, language, and nation to share in his Triune joy forever.

This devotional guide is intended to walk you through each theme over the next five weeks. Each day, you’ll find three things in this
guide: 1) A passage of Scripture related to the “sola” for that week, 2) Key questions to ask about the passage to help us think
through its meaning and how we can apply it to our lives. 3) Tips for how to pray the truth we’ve considered into our lives. In addition
to the sermons and devotional guide, we are also:

• Encouraging families to use the “Freedom Movement” PDF to read about the Reformation each Saturday
• Showing the new Martin Luther documentary on Wednesday, October 18 and October 25 during our Mid-Week gathering
• Having a Reformation Fellowship Meal following the service on Sunday, October 29
