Why I Want to Become a Teacher

Being a child of immigrants, education has been heavenly implemented in our household.

My parents never had the privilege to continue their education past grade school as they were

forced to work to be able to provide for their families. Because of this, I was told from a young

age that my one and only responsibility was to earn good grades, go to college, and maintain a

stable career. Education is my top priority. My parents are my biggest inspiration, but it does not

end there. My kindergarten teacher set the bar for what an ideal teacher should be, and because

of him, my passion for being a teacher sprouted.

I was raised as an only child for most of my life and having parents that are not from the

US, English was never spoken in our home. I went into kindergarten not knowing anything but

my name and my mother's phone number. Although my mother had taken the responsibility to

teach me the basics at home from a young age, I was unable to translate that when I began

school, this became a greater challenge when my teacher did not know Spanish! Even with

numerous obstacles being thrown our way, Mr. Bailey always managed to find a way for me and

his other non-English speakers to be able to learn along with our classmates. His love and

passion for not only teaching but, his students as well were undeniable. There was never a day

when learning was not fun.

I believe I am capable of providing my future students with the same learning

environment so that they too can have the same, if not better experience I was gifted with. I have

always had a love for children and although my future career was still not embedded in my mind

I knew that whatever I decided to do would involve kids. I strongly believe that childhood plays

a crucial role in everyone's lives, and because of this, we need passionate teachers to build a

strong foundation for the future of our planet. I have found that working with children does not

feel like a job, it is rewarding for all parties when the caretaker enjoys what they are doing.

My family has been a huge inspiration to me, we have a growing number of teachers in

our circle and I could not be happier! There is a strong sense of community within us, they have

all played a part in making me the person I am today. Seeing my cousins talk about their students

and their love for the job only makes me want to work harder towards my goal. Although with

every profession there are downsides, I am certain about my commitment to teaching. I hope that

I can plant a seed in my students so that they can not only be great people to others but to

themselves as well.

Realizing that not everyone was as fortunate as me, and having a loving support system

in and out of my home, made me want to pursue my dream further. Everyone needs a safe space,

especially children, and unfortunately, not everyone has that. A school is a place where children

can leave their abusive homes for eight hours a day. As teachers, the responsibility is put upon us

to ensure that they have a loving and caring environment where they can learn away from the

chaos that many experience.
