Section 1: System Description

Section 1: System Description

1-1. Overview
The Kodak PACS Link 9405 Print Server is a flexible, modular, image acquisition system that can
receive DICOM 3.0 print-class images from image sources on an Ethernet network. The Print Server
converts these images to 952 protocol and prints them on the local printer connected to the Print Server.
In this mode the Print Server acts as a DICOM print server. Figure 1–1 shows a typical Print Server
system.

Acquisition System

Figure 1-1. Print Server Basic System.

A Print Server receives images from image sources (remote users) on a DICOM/Ethernet network and
prints these images to a local printer.
The main control and processing device within the Print Server system is a standard personal computer
with Windows NT™ operating system and Kodak-supplied application software. The computer contains
a floppy disk or CD-ROM drive (depending on version) and does not have a monitor, keyboard or mouse.
For service access, technicians must connect a separate Service PC or temporarily connect a monitor,
keyboard and mouse to the Print Server system.

1-2. Input Options

The Print Server can be configured only as a Network Input. A network interface port on the computer
provides the connection point to an Ethernet 10BaseT or 100BaseT network. The network connection is
used for image input only when the Print Server is configured as a print server, where images from
network sources are printed on the local printer. Incoming images from the network must conform to
DICOM 3.0 print class protocol.

1-3. Output Options

A copper output option is the only option available for the Print Server. Kodak laser imagers with copper
image and COM inputs require a copper output board (COPCIL board).
The COPCIL board provides a digital output interface compatible with the digital input interface in
Kodak laser imagers. Both image and COM outputs are copper. The COPCIL board plugs into a PCI slot
in the computer.

1-4. Supported Printers

The only printer currently supported by the Print Server is the Kodak DryView 8100 Laser Imager.

1-5. Modem Board

The Print Server computer is equipped with a modem for remote access by service technicians. As part of
the service agreement, the customer must furnish an analog dial-up telephone line.

1-6. User Control

The operator does not control the Print Server activities. The Print Server automatically receives any
network images addressed to it and prints the images on the local printer.
For more information on user control, refer to the Kodak PACS Link 9405 Print Server User Guide.

1-7. Service Access

To service the Print Server, technicians must either connect a temporary monitor, keyboard and mouse,
or use a Service PC with pcANYWHERE™ remote access software.
The Service PC can be connected to the Print Server computer in two ways:
• Over an Ethernet network. The Service PC must contain an Ethernet interface for this
connection.
• Over the dial-up telephone network using a modem. The Print Server contains a modem card for
this purpose.
When connected to a Print Server, the monitor, keyboard and mouse on the Service PC appear as if they
are directly connected to the Print Server computer. From the Service PC, a technician can use the
Service Maintenance Tool (SMT) or access any Windows NT™ feature on the target Print Server
system.

Service Manual

2-2-2. Application Software

The Print Server application software consists of several processes (see table) that control Print Server
system operation. For any Print Server system, the processes that run depend on the input and output
options and how they are configured with SMT.

Table 1. Print Server Application Software.

Process Description
DBService Provides an interface to the Print Server data repository for access by job processes and
translators. Supports Print Job management, Equipment information, Status interfaces, and
Administrative interface.
Supervisor Starts all necessary Print Server child programs and passes correct instance numbers to
each program so the correct configuration information can be accessed. Monitors child
programs. Closes child programs. Restarts print jobs that were in process if processing
stopped.
Job Spooler Provides support for transmission of jobs through the Print Server. Job Spooler is
instantiated multiple times to support job processing for each destination. Jobs are created
in the database from the different input interfaces. Job Spooler will be instantiated to
access the jobs from the database and output them to the correct destination.
DISOL Provides DICOM Support as a Print SCP. Accepts DICOM print requests and formats them
for output to a network printer. Returns printer status to client.

The Kodak application software starts automatically when the Print Server is powered up and runs
continuously unless a service technician stops it. The application software must be stopped before SMT
can be used to configure the system. The active process boxes are displayed in the Windows NT taskbar,
at the bottom of the screen when the Print Server application software is running. The status boxes
disappear from the taskbar when the application software is stopped.
The application software also includes a database containing the configuration parameters needed by
service technicians when they install a Print Server system.

2-2-3. Service Maintenance Tool (SMT)

The Service Maintenance Tool is resident in the Print Server and used only by service technicians. Refer
to Section 6 for a detailed description of SMT. SMT has three main functions:
• System Configuration: used to load configuration parameters into the Print Server.
• System Administration: functions include starting and stopping application software, creating and
restoring back up files and database maintenance.
• Diagnostic: tests the COPCIL printer interface board. Also lets service technicians view several logs
that are useful for troubleshooting.

2-4 6E7323 - 2001 May Rev. B

Section 2: Theory of Operation

2-2-4. pcANYWHERE™ Remote Access Software

A Service PC with pcANYWHERE software installed can connect to a Print Server over an Ethernet
network or a dial-up telephone line. In the Print Server, pcANYWHERE is configured as a host, meaning
that the Print Server is ready to accept a call from a Service PC at any time.
When connected, the Service PC can control the Print Server as if it were directly connected to the Print
Server. With pcANYWHERE, technicians can use their Service PC to access the SMT on a Print Server
system, examine logs and upgrade the application software.

2-2-5. Uninterruptible Power Supply

Since the Print Server is used in a mobile application, the UPS operates as a standard UPS and has
special intelligent features. For power outages of less than 20 seconds, the UPS operates as a standard
UPS. When power outages of more than 20 seconds occur, the UPS signals the Print Server computer.
The Print Server software and the Windows NT operating system are shut down in an orderly manner.
When NT is safely shut down, the UPS turns power off the Print Server computer and 5 seconds later,
turns itself off to prevent draining the battery.

Do not plug the 8100 Imager into the UPS. The UPS is for use with the Print Server only. Failure to
observe this warning will result in a failure of the UPS and the 8100 Imager.

1. Using the mounting ratchet assembly, mark the floor at the midpoint of the mounting ratchet
assembly.
2. Align the UPS mounting-hole pattern template to the right side of the marked midpoint.
3. Drill pilot holes to a depth of 1-1/2 inches at the four points indicated on the template.
4. Screw the holding straps to the floor of the trailer using the four 3.8 x 1-1/2-inch lag screws.

Note
Locate the belt ratchet to the front side and ensure the rear mounts are reversed, causing a twist in the
straps that will take up the extra slack.

5. Place the UPS in the straps, snug the straps tight and latch the ratchet to secure the UPS to the floor.

Note
The drill template specifically places the four UPS straps so that the UPS does not block the 8100
Imager venting and is clear of the 8100 Imager casters. The two left-most mounting holes are located
on the centerline of the 8100 Imager mounting (Figure 3-1). The UPS is mounted 1-1/2 inches from
the back wall.

4-5. Program Logs

The Print Server maintains logs that record the communications between the Print Server and the various
external devices. The following logs are the main troubleshooting tool for problem identification in Print
Server systems.
• _ JOBSPOOLER (Output Log)
• _ DISOL (Input Log)
The appropriate logs are created when the Print Server is configured. When a log reaches the maximum
size of 4 megabytes, it is automatically given an extension of .old and a new log is started. You can
display the logs using the WordPad word-processor accessory. You can search the logs for command
codes or error codes using WordPad’s “Find” feature.
When using the logs for troubleshooting, you should have the Kodak Service Collection CD-ROM
available. Some of the logs contain SuperSet commands or 831/952 commands. To interpret error
responses in these logs, you may need to refer to the SuperSet or 831/952 Command Set Specifications
on the CD-ROM.
In WordPad, the key combination Ctrl/Home moves the cursor to the beginning of the log. The key
combination Ctrl/End moves the cursor to the last line.
A segment from one of the logs is shown below. Note that a time stamp precedes each entry. The date is
inserted periodically throughout the log.

Service Manual

4-5-2. Problem Troubleshooting

Use the following general approach to isolating problems:
1. Determine the approximate time the problem occurred.
2. Using the problem description, display the log that will most likely contain information about the
problem.

Note
Use the troubleshooting matrix to help identify the most likely log. You may have to examine more
than one log to find information about the problem.

3. In the appropriate log, find the approximate time that the problem occurred.
4. Search the log for error codes or other error indications.
• Error indications help determine the probable cause.
• Error indications are different for each type of log. Refer to the following log descriptions for an
explanation.
• Documents on the CD-ROM are displayed using Acrobat™ Reader. Use the Find feature in
Acrobat Reader to search for error codes.

4-5-3. JOBSPOOLER (Output Log)

The Print Server keeps a JOBSPOOLER log for each connected output device (printer or print server).
Possible output devices are:
• Copper-connected local printer
• Network-connected (DICOM) printer or print server

Each JOBSPOOLER log lists the Print Server commands sent to the output device and the output device
responses. The command types in a JOBSPOOLER log depend on the type of output device:
• For copper-connected local printers, the JOBSPOOLER log contains 952 commands.
• For network printers, the JOBSPOOLER log contains DICOM commands.

4-5-3-1. 952 JOBSPOOLER Commands

Commands
The Print Server controls a copper-connected local printer by sending 952 Commands to the printer. A
typical 952 Command is shown below:

AQU,iid
This command directs a printer to capture and store an image from a modality. The parameter iid
specifies the ID number assigned to the image (range 1 to 239).
Each command requires a response from the target printer. The Print Server will not send another
command before it receives a response to the previous command. The following examples are common
responses to 952 commands:

PAS
Indicates that the previous command executed properly.

FAI,BSY,command/parameters
Indicates that the previous command failed because the printer was busy. The failed command
and associated parameters are included in the response. For example: FAI,BSY,AQU 3. In this
response AQU is command that failed; 3 is the image ID.
For a detailed explanation of each 952 Command and the possible responses, refer to the 831/952
Command Specification on the Kodak Service Collection CD-ROM.

Command Sequence
Table 4–1 shows a typical sequence of 952 commands and responses, extracted from a JOBSPOOLER
log. Note that each command issued by the Print Server must be answered by a response from the local
printer. This command sequence acquires an image and sends it to a local printer.

4-5-3-2. DISOL (Input Log)

This log file is created when the Print Server is configured for a DICOM input. The information in this
log consists of the communication that occurs over a network between a DICOM modality and the Print
Server SCP.
The DICOM sequences between the OEM SCU and the Print Server SCP may vary, depending on the
OEM preferences and their interpretation of the DICOM specifications.
The following sequences, extracted from a DISOL log, provide a sample of what to expect when
monitoring a DISOL.log in the Print Server.

6-6-5. Combination Telephone/Network Connection

When several Print Servers are connected on the same network, usually only one will contain a modem.
With this type of system, you can make a telephone connection from your Service PC to a Print Server
that does not contain a modem by using the unit containing a modem as an intermediary.
First set up a pcANYWHERE telephone connection to the unit containing a modem (the intermediate
Print Server). You can then establish another pcANYWHERE connection over the network from the
intermediate computer to the unit without a modem (the target Print Server).
