1-1. Overview
The Kodak PACS Link 9405 Print Server is a flexible, modular, image acquisition system that can
receive DICOM 3.0 print-class images from image sources on an Ethernet network. The Print Server
converts these images to 952 protocol and prints them on the local printer connected to the Print Server.
In this mode the Print Server acts as a DICOM print server. Figure 1–1 shows a typical Print Server
system.
DICOM Printer
A Print Server receives images from image sources (remote users) on a DICOM/Ethernet network and
prints these images to a local printer.
The main control and processing device within the Print Server system is a standard personal computer
with Windows NT™ operating system and Kodak-supplied application software. The computer contains
a floppy disk or CD-ROM drive (depending on version) and does not have a monitor, keyboard or mouse.
For service access, technicians must connect a separate Service PC or temporarily connect a monitor,
keyboard and mouse to the Print Server system.
2-1-1. Computer
The Print Server is designed with a standard personal computer with Microsoft Windows NT
Workstation™ operating system. The computer runs the Kodak application software, which controls all
of the functions performed by the Print Server. APCI modem and COPCIL circuit boards supplement the
standard computer hardware.

The Kodak application software starts automatically when the Print Server is powered up and runs
continuously unless a service technician stops it. The application software must be stopped before SMT
can be used to configure the system. The active process boxes are displayed in the Windows NT taskbar,
at the bottom of the screen when the Print Server application software is running. The status boxes
disappear from the taskbar when the application software is stopped.
The application software also includes a database containing the configuration parameters needed by
service technicians when they install a Print Server system.

Note
The internal battery may not be connected when the UPS is shipped. Follow the Battery Replacement
procedure in the instruction sheet supplied with the UPS to open the unit and connect the battery, if
necessary.
Note
The UPS supplied with the Print Server is only used for 120 VAC, 50/60 Hz operation.
! WARNING
Do not plug the 8100 Imager into the UPS. The UPS is for use with the Print Server only. Failure to
observe this warning will result in a failure of the UPS and the 8100 Imager.
1. Using the mounting ratchet assembly, mark the floor at the midpoint of the mounting ratchet
assembly.
2. Align the UPS mounting-hole pattern template to the right side of the marked midpoint.
3. Drill pilot holes to a depth of 1-1/2 inches at the four points indicated on the template.
4. Screw the holding straps to the floor of the trailer using the four 3.8 x 1-1/2-inch lag screws.
Note
Locate the belt ratchet to the front side and ensure the rear mounts are reversed, causing a twist in the
straps that will take up the extra slack.
5. Place the UPS in the straps, snug the straps tight and latch the ratchet to secure the UPS to the floor.
Note
The drill template specifically places the four UPS straps so that the UPS does not block the 8100
Imager venting and is clear of the 8100 Imager casters. The two left-most mounting holes are located
on the centerline of the 8100 Imager mounting (Figure 3-1). The UPS is mounted 1-1/2 inches from
the back wall.

JOBSPOOLER X
Each of these subprograms generates a log. Several of these logs, described in the following section, are
useful for troubleshooting.
Note
Some types of logs may have more than one copy. For example, if there is more than one output
device there will be a JOBSPOOLER log for each output device.
Note
Use the troubleshooting matrix to help identify the most likely log. You may have to examine more
than one log to find information about the problem.
3. In the appropriate log, find the approximate time that the problem occurred.
4. Search the log for error codes or other error indications.
• Error indications help determine the probable cause.
• Error indications are different for each type of log. Refer to the following log descriptions for an
explanation.
• Documents on the CD-ROM are displayed using Acrobat™ Reader. Use the Find feature in
Acrobat Reader to search for error codes.
Each JOBSPOOLER log lists the Print Server commands sent to the output device and the output device
responses. The command types in a JOBSPOOLER log depend on the type of output device:
• For copper-connected local printers, the JOBSPOOLER log contains 952 commands.
• For network printers, the JOBSPOOLER log contains DICOM commands.
Commands
The Print Server controls a copper-connected local printer by sending 952 Commands to the printer. A
typical 952 Command is shown below:
AQU,iid
This command directs a printer to capture and store an image from a modality. The parameter iid
specifies the ID number assigned to the image (range 1 to 239).
Each command requires a response from the target printer. The Print Server will not send another
command before it receives a response to the previous command. The following examples are common
responses to 952 commands:
PAS
Indicates that the previous command executed properly.
FAI,BSY,command/parameters
Indicates that the previous command failed because the printer was busy. The failed command
and associated parameters are included in the response. For example: FAI,BSY,AQU 3. In this
response AQU is command that failed; 3 is the image ID.
For a detailed explanation of each 952 Command and the possible responses, refer to the 831/952
Command Specification on the Kodak Service Collection CD-ROM.
Command Sequence
Table 4–1 shows a typical sequence of 952 commands and responses, extracted from a JOBSPOOLER
log. Note that each command issued by the Print Server must be answered by a response from the local
printer. This command sequence acquires an image and sends it to a local printer.
Error Responses
If the local printer is unable to execute a command, it returns one of the following error responses:
FAI Fail
PTF Print Fail
BIM Bad Image
INV Invalid Command
In addition to these error responses, the local printer can send an ALM (Alarm) notice at any time (not in
response to a command). These responses are accompanied by additional information that helps identify
the reason for the failure to execute the command. For a full explanation to the above error responses,
refer to the 831/952 Command Specification on the Kodak Service Collection CD-ROM.
The error responses are useful for troubleshooting. Use the “Find” feature in WordPad to search for error
codes.
JOBSPOOLER/952 Log
A JOBSPOOLER log is shown below. Note that the log contains other entries, in addition to the 952
commands. In most cases, only the 952 commands and responses are useful for troubleshooting.
You can identify the commands sent from the Print Server by looking for the prefix “Send Command”
preceding each command. In the sample log below, “Send Command” is underlined and the actual 952
commands are shown in bold type.
You can also find the responses to commands by looking for the prefix “Get Response” preceding each
response. Throughout the sample log, “Get Response” is underlined.
When you view the log on the Print Server system, it is displayed in WordPad. You can use the Find
feature in WordPad to find each occurrence of “ Send Command” or “ Get Response”.

Start System Restarts the application software after being stopped with the Stop System button.
The application software processes will appear in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen
when the software is started.
Stop System Stops the Print Server application software. This must be done before using any of the
SMT configuration features on the I/O Card Setup tab or Device Setup tab. The process

Backup DB Backs up the configuration database to a diskette. Network parameters for the Print
Server are not backed up. You should make a backup disk after initial installation of a
Server, after any configuration changes and after installing a new version of the
application software.
Restore DB Reads in and replaces the configuration database from a backup diskette made using the
Backup DB feature. You will need to restore configuration settings after a full software
reload or if the configuration database becomes corrupted. It is not necessary to restore
databases after installing only the Print Server application software. Because of database
incompatibility, a backup disk sometimes will not restore if a new version of the
application software has been installed since the backup disk was made.
Compact DB Cleans the Print Server database by removing unused and old data. Do not use without
authorization from Service Engineering.
Repair DB Attempts to repair damage to the database. Do not use without authorization from
Service Engineering.
