The component functions are described as follows:

The DICOM modality scans the patient and produces digital image data. This data is transmitted to the
PSD via an Ethernet connection.
The PSD accepts the image data and stores the image on its hard drive. Communication is established
with the laser imager. The stored image data is converted into a format compatible with the laser
imager and then sent to the imager.
The laser imager prints images on sheets of film.

Section 2 – Theory of Operation

The PSD is a DICOM V3.0 Print Management Service Class network interface to Kodak laser imagers. It
translates DICOM messages received from modalities on the network, processes the image data and
prints the images on films to an Kodak Laser Imager. The image data received is stored on the hard disk
until the image is printed on a film. All errors (such as, laser imager out of film) are logged in an error log
file. All films printed are logged in an event log file.
There are four components in the PSD for handling image data as shown in Figure 2-1.

Figure 2-1. PSD Theory of Operation Block Diagram

DICOM Server
The DICOM Server is a software module responsible for receiving data from and sending responses back
to the modalities on the network. The DICOM Server’s main function is receiving DICOM messages and
passing the image data and printing information to the LI Server. The DICOM Server has a parent process
listening for connection requests from the network and spawns off a child process to handle the
communication with the modality once a connection is established.

LI Server
The LI Server is a software module responsible for print job queuing, processing and printing to the Laser
Imager. The LI Server receives the image data and information from the DICOM Server, processes the
data if necessary, and sends the data to the device driver. The LI Server also receives the laser imager
status and print job status from the device driver. The LI Server passes this status information to the
DICOM Server. After the images are printed, the image files are removed from the disk. At power-up, the LI
Server prints the unprinted images left on the disk.
Kodak 9400AUB PSD Service Manual
Section 2 – Theory of Operation
1999 Rev. B 2-2

Device Driver
The Device Driver resides in the operating system kernel and controls the operation of the interface board.
It receives the image data, creates laser imager commands for the target imager, and sends the
commands to the laser imager. The Device Driver also receives laser imager status information and
passes such information back to the LI Server.
In Version 1.6, a device driver script has been incorporated. The script is designed to keep the device
driver from going into a “sleep mode”. Intermittent lockups of the Solaris operating system were attributed
to a failure of the device driver to come out of “sleep mode” in a timely manner. For ease of servicing and
monitoring the Print Server, the script is halted when the technician logs into the system with the mmmims
username and mmmims1 password. This allows uninterrupted use of the AdminApp utility. The device
driver script reactivates when the technician selects either the Quit option from the AdminApp Main Menu
or the Reboot Computer option from the AdminApp Control Menu.

Laser Interface Board (FOSSIL board)

The LI interface board is a printed circuit board used to interface to the laser imager. It handles both image
data and commands to the laser imager and receives responses from the laser imager.

Section 3 – Installation
3-1. Introduction
This section contains installation and setup procedures for the following items:
3-2. Location and Placement Considerations
3-3. Laser Image Preparation
3-4. Connecting Cables
3-5. PSD Configuration Setup
3-6. Modem Configuration Setup
3-7. Running Test Software
3-8. Network Configuration
3-9. Running the PSD Contrast Test
3-10. PSD Configuration Backup

3-2. Location and Placement Considerations

The 9400 PSD can be located anywhere between the laser imager and the modality, as long as there is an
available network connection point (jack). Locating the PSD near the laser imager will minimize the length
of the fiber optic cables required for the connection.
The interconnect between the PSD and the laser imager is fiber optic. Fiber optic cables are available in a
variety of lengths from 3 to 1000 meters. The PSD connects to the modality via a 10BaseT Ethernet (UTP)
connection.
The PSD power cord and the modem telephone cable are both 2 meters long. Therefore, considerations
must be made as to the distance from an electrical outlet and a telephone jack. The modem can be placed
on top of the PSD so the length of the modem data cable is not an issue.
The PSD should be placed flat using its support feet on a tabletop or other sturdy platform. The floor is not
an acceptable location for the PSD because of dust buildup and limited access.

3-3. Laser Imager Preparation

1. Using the appropriate Kodak Laser Imager Service Manual, verify proper jumper setup for the input
module being installed. Both 9-bit and 12-bit input modules (959/969/8800) or memory boards (8700)
can be used with the PSD system.

Note
Input Modules used in the 959, 969, or 8800 must be jumpered for a transmission speed of 10 MHz
regardless of pixel bit width. The Laser Interface Board (FOSSIL) is fixed at a 10 MHz clock rate. On
old style input modules, the jumper must be placed between E2 and E3. On new style modules, the
jumper must be placed between W9-2 and W9-3.

2. Install the input module (959/969/8800) into the laser imager. The 8700 should be configured with the
FIB and TDB.
3. Connect a laptop PC to the MPC port located on the laser imager (reference MPC procedures).
4. Power up the laser imager.
5. Run the MPC application and set up the Comm, Image, Host, System, and EIB parameters as shown
in:
Table 3-1. 969 and 8700 Laser Imager Parameters (MPC for MicrosoftR Windows)
Table 3-2. 959 Laser Imager Parameters (MPC for MicrosoftR Windows)

Note
The EIB parameter load will indicate a failure because there is no EIB. However, the laser imager
NVRAM parameters will be loaded.

3-8. Network Configuration

The PSD system was configured at the factory with an IP address of 192.0.0.3 and geographic parameters
suitable for the U.S. Central Time Zone. It is unlikely that these parameters, especially IP addressing, are
appropriate for this account. Perform the procedures described in Section 6-5 to reconfigure the PSD.
Coordinate parameter specifications with the customer and modality support personnel where appropriate.
If the modality is on a different subnet from the PSD, perform the procedures described in Section 6-6 after
completing the steps in Section 6-5.
Be sure to record the parameters and leave with the PSD software at the account.

3-9. Running the PSD Contrast Test

The Contrast Test is used to establish the best density and contrast setting for this DICOM modality. It
requires coordination between the Kodak field engineer and the modality support personnel. The process
is one of selecting a desired density, receiving an image from the DICOM modality, and then examining the
test film. The film will have 15 images, one at each contrast table setting. The process is repeated with
different density settings, yielding a set of films across a range of densities and corresponding contrast
tables. Working with the customer, establish the desired density and contrast setting. Then, provide this
information to the DICOM modality support personnel so that every image from the modality has these
density/contrast parameters applied.
1. Verify that the size of the image (in pixels and rows) does not exceed the following maximums;
otherwise, the Contrast Test will fail.

Film Size
Laser Imager 8 x 10 11 x 14 14 x 17
959 x x 1295 x 930
969 718 x 545 1033 x 778 1356 x 958
8700 x x 1365 x 1003

2. Select Configuration from the Print_Server_Menu.

3. Select Contrast Test from the Print_Server_Config menu.
4. Enter the density value desired and press Return. The value is entered as a 3-digit value (e.g., a
desired density value of 2.7 is entered as 270, 3.0 as 300, and so on). The allowable range of values is
170–320. Press Return again to return to the Print_Server_Config menu.
5. Have the DICOM modality operator or support person select a single image that would be a good
candidate for assessing image quality. If possible, have the operator select a 15-up format, place the
selected image in position 1, then generate the print request.
6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 until the desired range of test films has been generated.
7. Determine the best density and contrast setting. Provide this information to the DICOM modality
operator or support person so that the images sent to the PSD have these values applied.
8. From the Print_Server_Config menu, select Restart to take the PSD out of Contrast Test mode.
9. Press ESC until you arrive back at the AdminApp_Main_Menu where you can select Quit to exit the
AdminApp application. The system should now be at the psd login: prompt.
10. Have the DICOM modality operator or support person send an image with the proper density and
contrast values. Verify that the image quality is acceptable.
The procedures in this section must be repeated for every DICOM modality on the network that may send
images to the PSD. This does entail logging back in as mmmims with the mmmims1 password to initiate the
AdminApp application and the Contrast Test.

6-5. Resetting the PSD Network Configuration

The PSD has a network configuration allowing for unique identification on the network, network structure
type, and time and date setup for its geographic region. It comes pre-set from the factory as shown in
Table 6-1. If changes are required, reset the PSD network configuration as follows:
1. Connect the laptop to the SUN SPARC. Refer to Section 6-2 for connection information.
2. At the login: prompt, type mmmims
3. At the password: prompt, type mmmims1
The AdminApp_Main_Menu appears.
4. Starting at the AdminApp_Main_Menu, make the following selections:
Select SPARC Diagnostics
Select Unix System Utility
Select Enter Unix C Shell
5. Enable modification of network configuration parameters by entering the following:
# sys-unconfig (answer yes to the questions regarding the need to halt the computer)
At the ok prompt, enter boot
6. When prompted, answer the PSD network configuration queries as shown in Table 6-1, on page 6-5.
Pay particular attention to the IP Address and netmask entries. This requires coordination with the
network administration personnel.
7. The sys-unconfig routine will also prompt you for the root password at the conclusion of the
reconfiguration. When prompted, type Stillwater
The system prompts you to verify the password entry.
When configuration and password queries are done, the SUN SPARC automatically reboots.
8. At the login: prompt, type in mmmims
9. At the password: prompt, type in mmmims1
The AdminApp_Main_Menu appears.
10. Starting at the AdminApp_Main_Menu, make the following selections:
Select Software Installation
Select Change Host Name in Service Table
11. If the system finds a mismatch between the host name of the system and the server table name, it will
ask you if you want the system to resolve it. Answer Y for yes.
If no mismatch exists, the system will report “No change is needed”.

12. After completion, you can disconnect the laptop from the SUN SPARC. Refer to Section 6-2 for
procedural information. If this procedure is being performed as part of the PSD installation process,
return to Section 3-9 (Running the PSD Contrast Test) or continue on to Section 6-6 if subnet
configuration is required.

6-6. Network Subnet Configuration

Network configurations may contain cases where the PSD and the DICOM modality are not on the same
ethernet subnet. The way to recognize this is that the first three segments of the ethernet IP Address do
not agree between the modality and the PSD. An example of two devices on the same subnet would be if
device #1’s IP Address is 204.152.72.45 and device #2’s IP Address is 204.152.72.31 (there is agreement
with the 204.152.72.xx portion of the IP Addressing).
In the cases where they disagree, we need three pieces of information in order to perform the
configuration: 1) the gateway IP Address; 2) the destination subnet; and 3) the number of hops.
1. Gateway IP Address – this value is the IP Address of the Router that serves the subnet that the PSD
resides on. The gateway will always have IP Address agreement for the first three segments. For
example, if the PSD’s IP Address is 192.25.67.71, the gateway will be 192.25.67.xx (it is very common
to see the xx value as 249).
2. Destination Subnet – this value will be entered in the form xxx.yyy.zzz.0 (the last segment is a zero).
For example, if the modality’s IP Address is 172.36.121.25, then the destination subnet would be
entered as 172.36.121.0 (this indicates that we want to reach all nodes on the destination subnet –
hence the 0 as the last segment).
3. Number of Hops – this value is the number of data links (routers) to the final destination subnet. We
usually find the number of hops to be 1.
Procedure (using the AdminApp utility):
1. At the login: prompt, type mmmims
2. At the password: prompt, type mmmims1
3. To configure the system for subnets, go to the Software_Installation menu from the
AdminApp_Main_Menu.
4. Select Add Routes for Subnet Setup
5. Make the Gateway IP Address, Destination Subnet, and Number of Hops entries when prompted.
6. Return to Section 3-9 (Running the PSD Contrast Test) to complete the installation of the PSD.

6-7. Reloading the Device Driver

The PSD device driver can get into a lockup state where communication breaks down between the device
driver software and the Operating System software. What happens when the device driver locks up is that
the Operating System is stalled in trying to service the device driver requests and therefore cannot
maintain the ethernet network interface requests. So, to the modality it appears as though the PSD is no
longer reachable on the network. Another symptom is that dial ins via the modem are not possible because
the Operating System is no longer able to manage the modem software.
To reload the device driver software, perform the following procedure:
1. Connect the laptop PC to the SUN SPARC. Refer to Section 6-2 for connection information.
2. At the login: prompt, type root
3. At the password: prompt, type Stillwater
4. At the # prompt, enter the following sequence; complete each entry by pressing the Enter key:
/etc/rc2.d/S94dpm stop (stops the Print Server application software)
cd /opt/mmmdrivers/li3m (specifies the location of the device driver directory)
pwd (verifies the change to the device driver directory)
drv_remove (removes the device driver software module)
drv_install (re-installs the device driver software module)
cd / (returns the system to the root directory)
/etc/rc2.d/S94dpm start (restarts the Print Server application software)
exit (returns the system to the login: prompt)
5. Login as mmmims (with the mmmims1 password) to enter the AdminApp utility. Test for normal system
operation. When finished testing, disconnect the laptop PC from the SUN SPARC. Refer to Section 6-2
for procedural information.

6-8. Repairing the File System

File systems become corrupted for a variety of reasons. The corruption often leads to interference with
normal system operation. Symptoms range from slow operation to the inability to login to the system either
remotely or locally.
In order to correct an inability to login situation, perform the following procedure:

Note
A direct connection to the SUN SPARC computer is required.

1. Connect the laptop PC to the SUN SPARC. Refer to Section 6-2 for connection information.
2. Power up the SUN SPARC.
3. When the “banner” appears (this is the header indicating a SPARC computer with X amount of
memory, ethernet address, etc.), perform a BREAK sequence. With Hyper Terminal, the BREAK
sequence is CTRL BREAK; with Procomm Plus, the BREAK sequence is ALT B. A successful
BREAK sequence yields an ok prompt.
4. At the ok prompt, type boot -s (there is a space after the boot command). This sequence causes
the SUN SPARC to boot up in Single User Mode. The system will not be functional for normal
operation, but will allow file system maintenance.
5. When the system prompts for a password in order to perform maintenance operations, type the
Stillwater password. The system then boots the remainder of the way up and yields a # prompt.
6. At the # prompt, type cd / (this puts the system at the root directory). Next, type ls (this provides a
directory listing). Search for a file labeled core.
7. To remove the core file, type rm core at the # prompt.
8. If the core file is not found in the root directory, then a search of the system is indicated. At the #
prompt, type find . -name core -print (make sure to place the period where indicated; the
-print portion of the command instructs the system to print the information to the screen). The
system will list the directory path to each core file that it finds.
9. Remove other core files by performing the rm command followed by the full path listing provided
by the find command (e.g., if find yields: ./usr/rmmount/core, then at the # prompt, enter
rm /usr/rmmount/core and the file should be removed).
10. After removing all of the core files found, type reboot and the system should boot up in the normal
mode of operation. Verify that a login is now possible.
11. Login as mmmims (with the mmmims1 password) to enter the AdminApp utility. Test for normal system
operation. When finished testing, disconnect the laptop PC from the SUN SPARC. Refer to Section 6-2
for procedural information.

Appendix C – Dual Printer Configuration

This appendix provides setup instructions for configuring a PSD into a dual printer environment (i.e., two
laser printers being driven from a single IMS Electronic Module such as the Model 8800 Multi-Input
Manager).
If configured per the procedure described below, the customer will be able to change printer destination via
the Local Keypad (969) or Front Panel (8800). The technician has an additional option of changing
destination by modifying input module parameters using the MPC software utility.
The following are limitations to setting the PSD for dual printer support:
Inferior job tracking – a job is considered as “printed” once the input module verifies receipt of the
images (as opposed to when the film exits from the laser imager). Therefore, if a film jam occurs in
the laser imager, the images will have been deleted from the disk drive of the PSD prematurely.
 No annotation support.
 No trim support.
 No landscape printing support.
The following procedure sets the PSD in dual printer support mode:
1. In Section 3-3, set up the system as shown in Table 3-2.
2. In Section 3-5, set up the PSD Configuration (Table 3-3 and Table 3-4) as if connecting to a Model 959
Laser Imager, with one exception: the Printer model ( in Table 3–4) should match the actual Laser
Imager type (that is M8700, M969, etc.)
3. Other than the exceptions noted in steps 1 and 2, complete the remainder of the installation as
described in Section 3.

Appendix D – Deleting Images and Print Jobs
1999 Rev. B D-1

Appendix D – Deleting Images and Print Jobs

Images and print jobs can become stuck in the print queue due to image file corruption, or due to an
unsupported parameter specified for printing the image (e.g., indicating LANDSCAPE in the DICOM header
when printing to a Model 959, which does not support image rotation).
There may be other times when several print jobs have been created, but the technician would like to stop
the printing operation before the films actually get generated.
The following procedure will remove unwanted images and print jobs. Note that both the images and their
corresponding print jobs must be removed.
1. Connect the laptop PC to the SUN SPARC. Refer to Section 6-2 for connection information.
2. At the login: prompt, type root
3. At the password: prompt, type Stillwater
4. At the # prompt, enter the following sequence; complete each entry by pressing the Enter key:
/etc/rc2.d/S94dpm stop (stops the Print Server application software)
cd /opt/data/ps/images (specifies the location of the image directory)
pwd (verifies the change to the image directory)
rm * (removes the image files)
cd /opt/data/ps/pj (specifies the location of the print job directory)
pwd (verifies the change to the print job directory)
rm * (removes the print jobs)
cd / (returns the system to the root directory)
/etc/rc2.d/S94dpm start (restarts the Print Server application software)
exit (takes the system back to the login: prompt)
5. Login as mmmims (with the mmmims1 password) to enter the AdminApp utility. Test for normal system
operation. When finished testing, disconnect the laptop PC from the SUN SPARC. Refer to Section 6-2
for procedural information.
