ME331a – K1

QUIZ #3

Instruction: CHANGE the highlighted value to a value you want to use. Each question must be
presented in the following order:
1. Problem – with the chosen value indicated in the problem
2. Complete Solutions – with the formula, substitutions, conversions and sketch if there are
any.
3. Final Answer – summary of all answers.
Camera must be open and NO-TALKING is allowed during examination. CAUGHT CHEATING (that is,
the same value chosen or the same solution, etc.) WILL BE GIVEN AUTOMATICALLY A SCORE OF
ZERO!

Due: Fri., Oct 21, 2022 @ 6:30 pm; submission cut-off – 6:30 pm (no submission is accepted after cut-
off)

1. The 800 mm pipe shown in example #1 conducts water from reservoir A to a pressure turbine which
discharges to a 1 m diameter pipe into tailrace B. If the loss of head from the reservoir to the entrance of the
turbine is 5% of the available pressure head at the entrance of the turbine and the loss of head on the
discharge side of the turbine is 1% of the pressure head of the discharge side, how much power is produced
if 850 liter/sec of water is flowing? Note: use the elevations given in the example.

2. The pump shown in example #2 is rated at 50 KW. It uses a 200 mm diameter in the suction and
discharges through a 150 mm diameter pipe which terminates in a nozzle, 40 mm in diameter. The head
loss in the suction side is 2 times of the velocity head and 5 times of the velocity head in the discharge side.
Determine the quantity of water that this pump can deliver. Note: use the elevations given in the example.

3. A fire pump delivers water through a 300 mm main to a hydrant to which is connected a 75 mm hose,
terminating in a 25 mm nozzle. The nozzle is 3 m above the hydrant and 18 m above the pump. Assuming a
total friction loss of 8 m from the pump to the base of the nozzle and a loss in the nozzle of 6% of the velocity
head in the jet and neglecting air resistance, what gage pressure at the pump is necessary to throw a stream
24 m vertically above the nozzle? If the reservoir is 3 m below the pump and the suction diameter of the
pump is 320 mm, what horsepower of the pump is needed, if the head loss from the reservoir to the inlet of
the pump is 3% of the velocity head?
