ESO37 Assignment 3

A factor of safety is important in engineering design to lower the possibility of failure and raise safety. It ensures structures can withstand greater loads than operational loads to protect safety. The factor of safety is the ratio of a component's ultimate stress to its working stress, representing its increased strength over what is necessary. Electrical engineering especially requires considering factors of safety due to the dangers of electricity like electric shock, fire, and arc flash. Two incidents that highlight the importance of proper design and materials are a building collapse in India due to foundation issues and excessive stress, and a wedding hall floor collapse in Israel that killed 23 people due to a weak construction method.

A factor of safety lowers the possibility of a product failing and raises people's sense
of security. The safety component is crucial when it comes to fall prevention and safety
equipment. There is a chance of harm and death from a building failure, as well as financial
loss for a business. When there is a chance that one of these outcomes might occur due to
a failure, the safety factor is larger. The term "factor of safety" or "safety factor" is
extremely essential in engineering design.

Safety is of the highest importance while developing any Engineering product or

component. Each component is intended to withstand greater loads than its actual
operational loads to protect the safety of those objects. As a result, there will always be
some margin or cushion in relation to its functioning capacity. This is ensured at the design
stage by taking a proper safety factor into account. The factor of safety is defined as the
ratio of the component material's ultimate stress to the working stress. It represents the
component's increased strength over the necessary strength. Electrically powered
equipment can offer a substantial threat to employees when mishandled or improperly
maintained, which is why factors of safeties are important in the domains of electrical
engineering. Many electrical gadgets have high voltage or high-power needs, which adds
to the danger. Electric shock, fire, and arc flash are the three most dangerous aspects of
electricity. Electrical shock happens when a human comes into touch with both wires of an
electrical circuit, one wire of an electrified circuit and the ground, or a metallic item that
has become energized by contact with an electrical conductor.

Here are some incidents that is due to improper use of materials or under design
structures. On December 8, 2016, the multi-story building in Nanakramguda collapsed due
to a water sump flowing deeper than the base and excessive stress on the foundation. The
building fell owing to a poor supporting structure coupled with insufficient design and high
stress on column and base that caused rapid failure, according to a study. Originally, the
construction was only intended to have ground plus three levels. However, builder
Satyanarayana Singh added a stilt, five higher storeys, and a penthouse. The floor of the
Versailles wedding hall in Jerusalem fell during Keren and Asaf Dror's wedding in 2001,
killing 23 people and injuring hundreds more. The awful tragedy was recorded on video
and broadcast globally, disseminating images of it throughout the world. Before the fall,
witnesses described the floor drooping. The major concern, according to Haaretz News,
was the Pal-Kal construction method, a low-cost way of making light-weight concrete that
was outlawed immediately after the disaster. Furthermore, the structure was initially
intended in two sections, with one side having just two floors and the other having three.
Half of the third level was just intended to be a roof at the time and lacked structural
strength.
