Cv

• There are two Cv values

One for your system (which you calculate)
One for the valve (which is supplied by the valve
company)
• Cv gives an indication of the flow capacity.
• We never want the Cv of the valve to be smaller than
the Cv of the system.
• This equation is for the Cv of the system for liquids. The
one for gas is more complex. Slide CV 2-1
Cv formula
For Gas
For Liquid

Q=Cv(DP/SG)0.5
Cv
• Cv is number of USG of water per minute passing through the
valve in full open condition with 1 psi pressure drop across the
valve at 15 oF
• Cv is capacity of valve in terms of water which helps us to
identify suitable size required for any fluid in any pressure/
temperature condition.
• Kv is Quantity of water in m3/h at temperature between 5 to
40 oC that flow through the valve at specified travel with a
pressure drop of 1 bar.
Kv = 0.856 Cv Slide CV 2-3
Seat Leakage rates:
• ANSI CLASS II.
• 0.5 % of rated Cv.
• Used for pressure balanced trims with metal seals.
• ANSI CLASS IV.
• 0.01 % of rated Cv.
• Used for all standard valves with metal seals.
• ANSI CLASS V.
-12 3
4 x 10 m /hr per mm of orifice dia per bar pressure drop
• ANSI CLASS VI.
• Bubble tight.
• Used for soft seated valves where tight shut off is important.
