Andes and Midlatitude Countries

Andes Countries

1. a series of parallel mountain ranges that run along the Pacific coast of South America; the longest
continuous group of mountain ranges in the world stretching for 4,500 miles

2. a high plain bordered by the two main branches of the Andes in Peru and Bolivia

3. the broad plateaus and valleys that spread across the Atlantic side of South America; fertile soil for growing
crops and grasslands for grazing cattle

4. one of the world’s largest wetlands that run along the Paraguay River; produces a diverse ecosystem of
plants and animals

5. a river that empties into the Atlantic Ocean on the border of Argentina and Uruguay

Climate Diversity

1. The variety of landforms (mountains, plains, etc.) causes the climate to vary from place to place.

2. The higher the altitude, the cooler the temperatures are.

3. The midlatitude countries have a temperate, or moderate, climate, and rainfall is evenly distributed
throughout the year.

4. Altitude: Climate changes drastically as elevation changes.

5. El Niño and La Niña are unusual weather patterns caused by changes in wind and ocean currents.
During El Niño, the climate becomes much warmer and wetter than normal. During La Niña, winds from the
east become very strong and cool, and often, heavy clouds will form.
