Lec 8

The document discusses the Laplace transform and its application to electrical network analysis. The Laplace transform is a powerful tool that transforms a circuit from the time domain to the frequency domain, allowing circuits to be analyzed using algebraic equations rather than differential equations. It can provide both the natural and forced responses of a circuit with a single operation. The document outlines the definition of the Laplace transform and conditions for convergence. It also describes several properties of the Laplace transform, including linearity, time and frequency shifting, differentiation and integration, and how it handles initial and final values.

LAPLACE TRANSFORM
• A very powerful tool for analyzing circuits with sinusoidal or nonsinusoidal inputs.

• Laplace transformation:
ü Transform the circuit from the time domain to the frequency domain,
ü Obtain the solution
ü Apply the inverse Laplace transform to the result to transform it back to the time domain.
• The Laplace transform can be applied to a wider variety of inputs than phasor analysis.

• It allows us to work with algebraic equations instead of differential equations, hence, problems involving initial
conditions is easy.

• Laplace transform is capable of providing the total response of the circuit (natural and forced response) in one single
operation.

DEFINITION OF LAPLACE TRANSFORM

• Given a function f (t), its Laplace transform, denoted by F(s) or L[f (t)],

• A function f (t) may not have a Laplace transform. In order for f (t) to have a Laplace
transform, the above integral must converge to a finite value.

CONVERGANCE OF LAPLACE TRANSFORM

• The integral converges when

for some real value σ = σc.

• In this region, |F(s)| < ∞ and F(s) exists. F(s) is undefined outside the region of
convergence. Fortunately, all functions of interest in circuit analysis satisfy the
convergence criterion and have Laplace transforms.
• Finding the inverse Laplace transform f(t) is beyond the scope of this course therefore
we will use a lookup table to find f(t) from F(s). The Laplace transform pair is given as

• Meaning it’s a two directional transform

PROPERTIES OF LAPLACE TRANSFORM

• Time Periodicity
• If function f (t) is a periodic function such as shown in Fig. 15.3, it can be represented as
the sum of time-shifted functions shown in Fig. 15.4. Thus,

• Transform each term in the above Eq and apply the time-shift property.
