DLP-Performance Task - 1

This document outlines a daily lesson plan for an 11th grade science class that will discuss the evolving concept of life based on emerging evidence. The lesson plan involves students completing a performance task experiment where they observe meat in different containers to understand how maggots emerge and how this relates to early concepts of how life originated. Students will then present their findings and compare and contrast theories of the origin of life in a Venn diagram. The teacher will evaluate students' understanding through questions about which came first, the chicken or egg, and how to justify the answer with evidence.

*Edmund would want to know if life can really emerge from non-living things.
He decided to perform the experiment similar to the one performed by
Fanrcesco Redi. He place three pieces of meat in three different jars. The first
jar was uncovered, the second one was covered with cork, and the third was
covered with mesh cloth. After a week, his experimental set-up looks like the
picture presented by the teacher.
Guide Questions
1. What do you think causes the emergence of maggots on the meat placed in
the first jar?
2. Why is it that the other meats found in second and third jar have no maggots
in it?
3. How did this experiment prove the concept of origin of life presented by
Franceso Redi?
