WHICH IS BETTER, SANITIZER OR SOAP AND WATER?

Case # 1
It’s lunch time. Kim brings out her “baon” from her bag. Before she eats, she
remembers to pray and clean her hands first. Unfortunately, handwashing area is far from
her classroom, so she opted to use hand sanitizer instead of washing her hands with
soap and water. She wondered, “will it be enough to clean my hands with hand sanitizer
only instead of washing them with soap and water? Which is better, cleaning my hands
with hand sanitizer only or washing it with soap and water?”

Step #1.
Clean the area and prepare the materials
needed. Make 3 set ups. Label each set up
with “Set Up A, B and C”.
Step #2.

Fill the half of the plastic cup with water.

Then, add 3 tbsps. of powdered milk. Stir
evenly and pour it onto the small plate for
Set Up A.
Repeat the process again for Set Up B
and C.

THE BUG’S FIRE

Case # 2
It’s Kim’s birthday! One of her presents was a mystery jar with a shining something
inside. She likes fairies and fantasies, so her father gifted her with a jar and said to her
that it has a glowing fairy friend inside.

Kim excitedly opened the jar and discovered that it was a bug. A mysterious one
with a glowing tail. It can make its tail glow without even burning himself. She then
intriguingly asked, what’s inside his tail? How can he make his tail glow without burning
himself and what kind of bug is this?

IV. My Data Gathering Procedure:

• Document every step by taking photos and writing down your

Step #1.
Place 3 tbsps. of baking soda in a clear bottle.
Then, pour 1/2 cup of oil into the container.
Close the container and set it aside.
 Step #2.
Get 2 plastic cups, label them “Solution A and
Solution B” respectively.

Put 3 tbsp of vinegar on plastic cup labeled with

Solution A and 3 tbsp of water on plastic cup
labeled with Solution B.

Step #3.
Add 4 drops of liquid food color to vinegar on
plastic cup A. Mix the solution.
GQ: What happened to the vinegar when you add
the liquid food color?

Step #4.
Get the ink inside the highlighter by removing the
cap and pulling out the felt. Soak the felt with water
on plastic cup labeled with Solution B.

Squeeze until the water is completely stained.

Remove the felt and stir the solution.

Step #5.
Get the bottle and your phone. Turn on the
flashlight. Carefully place it under the backlight of
your phone.

Remove the cap of the bottle and pour Solution A

into the container.

from Solution A?

Lastly, pour Solution B on to the bottle. Observe.

ARE BLACK PENS ACTUALLY BLACK?

Case # 3
Kim is an artist. She loves designing, doodling, and sketching. She sees herself as a fashion
designer someday.
One day, Kim is almost done doing her project for her MAPEH subject. However, during
break time, while drinking water she unfortunately spills the water on her work. The black linings
of the marker dispersed and turned into different colors. Kim was surprised with the colors and
speculated, “are black markers really black?”

Step #1.
Clean the area and prepare the materials
needed.
 Step #2.
Cut the paper towel into 2 inches wide
strips. Attach the end of the paper towel
to a barbeque stick.

Step #3.

Place a line on the paper towel 1 inch

from the bottom to show the starting line.
Draw a small dot using your favorite
marker in the middle of the line.
Repeat this with different black
colored markers with different brands.

Step #4.

Pour a small amount of water into a clear

glass. Then, carefully place the strip of
paper into the water and let it rest on the
bottom.
Make sure to wet only the tip of the
paper! Watch as the ink moves up the
filter paper.

KETCHUP STAIN REMOVER SOLUTION FOR CLOTHES

Case # 4
One afternoon, Kim is having her “merienda”. She likes eating French fries with ketchup
specially when reviewing and doing her assignments.
However, while enjoying her snacks, she accidentally stained her favorite white shirt with
ketchup. She then suddenly remembered her mother reminding her to be careful whenever she
wears light colored clothes because the stain is quite difficult to remove.
She immediately went to the laundry area to fix it. Unfortunately, there’s no stain remover
left. So, she decided to walk off to the kitchen and find something that she could use to remove
the ketchup traces in her shirt. While thinking aloud, she said, “what would be the best DIY
remover solution for ketchup stain?”

Step #1.

Clean the area and prepare the materials

needed. Make 5 set ups. Label each
bottle with “Set Up A, B, C, D and E”.
 Step #2.

Fill the half of the bottles with water.

Do not add anything in Set Up A.

Step #3.

Using a funnel,
add 3 tbsps. of white vinegar in Set Up B,
3 tbsps. of liquid dishwashing soap in Set Up C,
3 tbsps. of calamansi extract in Set up D and
3 tbsps. of alcohol in Set Up E.

Close the bottles and shake the solutions.

GQ: What do you think is the purpose of having
Set Up A in this experiment?

Step #4.

Get the 5 pieces of cloth with stains and

placed them inside each bottle then leave
the set ups for 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes, secure the lids and

shake the bottles well.

Using a stick, get the clothes inside the

bottles. Let them dry. Observe. Remember
to take a before and after photo of the
clothes.

Chemistry Word Wall:

• SOLUTION – is a homogeneous mixture of a solute dissolved into a solvent.
• SATURATED SOLUTION – A solution containing the maximum amount of solute
that can be dissolved in a particular solvent at a particular temperature.
• UNSATURATED – a solution which contains less solute than the solution is
capable of dissolving.
• SUPERSATURATED – a solution which contains more dissolved solute than
saturated solutions and dissolves more solute than the solution has the capacity
to at a given temperature.
• DILUTED – a solution with a small amount of solute in a large amount of solvent.
• CONCENTRATED – a solution with a large amount of solute in a small amount of
solvent.

Enumerate and describe the types of solutions according to the proportion of the solute and the

BLEACHING: HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?

Case # 5
Summertime! Kim being an ocean lover wants to create an outfit for the summer party in
their school. She wanted to try the tie dye method of bleaching. She thinks that it would be great,
practical, and artistically fun to do.
She immediately goes into her closet and hunt for the right dress. She gathered the
materials needed and prepare to dye her dress. However, she suddenly stopped and wondered,
“how much bleach is enough?”

REMEMBER!

ALWAYS BE CAREFUL IN HANDLING

BLEACH. PROTECT YOUR HANDS AND
EYES. OPEN WINDOWS WHEN YOU’RE
USING IT.
Step #2.

Using a syringe, measure a 100 ml (for Set

Up A), 90 ml (for Set Up B), 80 ml (for Set
Up C) and 70 ml (for Set Up D) of water and
transfer them in their corresponding plastic
bottles.

Step #3.

Do not add anything in Set Up A.

Again, using a syringe, measure a 10 ml (for
Set Up B), 20ml (for Set Up C), and 30 ml
(for Set Up D) of bleach (Zonrox) and put
them in their plastic bottles. Shake the bottle
to mix the solutions well.

Step #4.

Get your colored paper and cut it into 4

smaller pieces. Place one piece of the
colored paper in every plastic bottle. Close
the caps and shake the bottles. Count 1 to
10 before opening the caps.

Using a stick, get the colored paper inside

the bottles. Let them dry. Observe.

of the paper.
