Theater is a live performance by an actor or actress to present a typical story or an
imagined event before a live audience using a combination of different art forms such as
speech, music, song and dance. The kinds of theatrical performances that we see today
came from different cultures that influence the Philippines since the Spanish colonialization
to Japanese and American occupation.
Here are the different Philippine theatrical forms that you need to know:

Komedya – one of the colorful theatrical traditions in the Philippines used by the
Spanish as a method to spread Christianity. This theatrical form describes the conflict of
Christians and Muslims. The two types of komedya are Secular Komedya, the ones
performed at local fiesta, and Religious Komedya which depicts the life of Christ or any Saint
C. IMMERSE and is usually seen during church celebrations.
Sarsuela – an art form of lyric theater drama, comical in nature and is incorporated
with singing, dancing and dialogue. It portrays the typical Filipino realities which viewers can
relate their lives to.
Bodabil – stage show that became popular during the Japanese period based on French
vaudeville. Bodabil evolved from the usual stage act to a stage presentation featuring
comedy, musical monologue, skits, impersonators, acrobats, and even magical acts.
