Kindergarten: Beginner Writers

This unit is a 8-10 week study around beginner writing skills. Kindergarten students learn the
early stages of writing: Drawing, labeling, and formation of a sentence. Students learn from
teacher modeling and independent practice to practice their skills. Students will progressively
add more detail to their drawings, including setting, facial expression, clothes, characters,
colors, and more. Labels will be added to continue contributing detail, and lastly, a sentence
will be written with invented spelling to describe their answer to an opinion question, along
with a detailed drawing. Kindergartners will practice discussing their opinions and drawing
and writing about these opinions. Essential questions will launch the unit and be developed
as students progress through the beginning stages of writing.
