Except where the assessment of an assignment is group based, the

final piece of work that is submitted must be your own work. Close
similarity between assignments is likely to lead to an investigation for
cheating.
You must also ensure that you acknowledge all sources you have used.
Submissions that are considered to be the result of collusion or
plagiarism will be dealt with under the University’s Disciplinary
Procedures, and the penalty may involve the loss of academic credits.

If you have any doubts about the extent to which you are allowed to
collaborate with your colleagues, or the conventions for acknowledging
the sources you have used, you should first of all consult module
documentation and, if still unclear, your module leader.
Turnitin To obtain a Turnitin scan before submitting your work to your
department please visit the University's ‘Turnitin at BCU’ Moodle site.
Work that is submitted and scanned through this service is not stored
on the main Turnitin system and this is NOT your submitted work.
Conditions of Progression In order to achieve a pass mark for the module an overall grade of 50%
must be achieved and all learning outcomes evidenced. In addition to a
first attempt, there will be a second (final) attempt (all dates as above).

Where to get help You can access support and guidance from many additional sources in
the university including from the library and the HELS Academic
Development Department (PDD) (in addition to support from the module
leader).

Assessment Task

Imagine that you are working in Public Health. This could be in the UK, another country or for the World
Health Organisation. The Director of Public Health (DPH) has asked you to prepare a 3000-word written
report on an area of Public Health practice (chosen from a given list).
Your report must be clearly communicated, taking a critical analytical approach which explicitly draws on
Public Health theory, models, approaches and ethical frameworks covered in the module. Every single
point must be supported by a citation and it is expected that sources will be appropriate (e.g. academic
textbooks from the module reading list and beyond; journal articles and appropriate websites).
The table below indicates areas that must be included in the report (headings and themes) and suggestions
for areas that you could draw on to demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes (critical analysis).

Submission Details

Upload your assignment to the portal in the assessment section on Moodle by 3pm.

Do ensure that you clearly identify your sources when referring to theory. All sources will need to be fully
referenced following Harvard conventions with a full reference list to be included at the end of the same
document.

Full details of how to include a reference within your written work (a citation), and how to present a full
reference list at the end of your work, can be found in the Faculty guide to Referencing.

Your work will be marked by a member of the public health team including visiting lecturers. A sample will
be internally moderated by a member of the teaching team; and externally moderated by the External
Examiner. You will receive feedback within 20 working days (i.e. excluding weekends and bank holidays)
from the date of submission. Your feedback will be provided in the same place you submitted your work
and will comprise a general comment including feed forward (how you can use feedback to improve future
work); feedback on how you met the learning outcomes using a marking grid; and comments on your
essay.

Formative Opportunities

Formative opportunities are designed to help you prepare for the summative assignment; to ensure that
you understand you how upload work to Moodle; and to give you early feedback.

Feedback will be in class from your tutors and peers.

Task 1 (Formative) – Upload to Moodle before 3pm on 28th October 2022

A brief (500 words max) ‘Plan’ for your summative assignment. All learning outcomes addressed.
The plan should include
a) A brief initial explanation of how your topic is a public health concern.
b) Some initial identifying of the range of causal factors (don’t forget to include structural factors or
primary prevention).
c) Setting out at least the headings/intentions for the rest of the assignment.
Remember to include your reference list so far.
Bring three copies of your plan to the session on 4th November. You will work in small groups to review and
comment on each other’s plans. You may, if you wish, build on this work for the main, summative task.

Task 2 (Formative) - Presentation during session on 11th November 2022

Department of Therapies and Public Health
School of Health Sciences; Faculty of Heath, Education & Life Sciences
You will work in groups (of around 6 – 10 students). Each group will be asked to research one of the
following models of health promotion/public health work; and prepare and deliver a presentation on this for
the wider group.

Caplan and Holland (1990)

Rayner and Lang (2012)

Tannahill (1985)

Ottawa Charter (1986)

Ewles and Simnett (1985)

French and Adams (1986)

Your presentation should focus on explaining the model (using examples of different interventions to do so)
and discussion about its strengths and weaknesses. You should be prepared to answer questions from
the group. You will have 10 minutes for your presentation and questions.

Your module tutors will use Beattie’s model in session 5 to demonstrate one way to approach this task.
Your presentations should be ready for session 8.
