CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Project Context

First Aid is applied to injured or ill persons in any health threatening setting in
order to save life, prevent degradation of the situation or contribute to a treatment process
before professional medical are available or late to came. First aid can be defined as
emergency care or treatment to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury. First aid is
important thing to give instruction to the user order to ease the pain, to maintain life, to
promote recovery and to prevent patient condition from being worst until professional
medical help can be obtained.

The knowledge of first aid could help in a situation with multiple victims. Lives
could be saved by survivors without injuries of disasters. With basic training, they could
save lives without tools or equipment for reviving. By teaching life supporting first aid to
the public, if more incidents like the 2001 World Trade Center Attack and the 1988
Armenia Earthquake were to occur, uninjured survivors would be able to preserve victims
with injuries until rescuers arrives. (Crippen, 2001)

An emergency first aider has various roles and responsibilities. It is important first
aider take these roles and responsibilities seriously as first aid is potentially lifesaving in
an emergency situation. In Metro Rescue Volunteer, Santiago City their main role, is to
assist people in distress, rescue fire victims and any accident as quickly as possible. And
In terms of technology they are lacking of resources like books about first aid, and in
terms of online resources are limited only. On the other hand the staff of Metrocom
Rescue Volunteer has laborious to prepare the leaflet, Time consuming in creating copies
and time consuming to distributing. Reproductive materials of learning materials is also
expensive to the Metrocom Rescue Volunteer staffs for photocopy the first aid
information.

As a result the researchers will develop First Aid Android Application. The First aid
android application contain the emergency information, auto search, emergency hotline
numbers, picture, videos and quiz about first aid are added.. This application was
designed to help people when suffer a sudden injury and illness. When an injury suddenly
happens then the user can choose from the apps what type of injury that happen. Next,
this application will provide easy step by step instructions to help the user for give
treatment to him or others. Then, the user also can watch the video that provided for each
circumstance. By using this application, the user can answer the quiz given for their
knowledge to show off their live saving knowledge. Furthermore, the user can learn
knowledge about emergency situation and circumstance. The user can minimize their
panic when something happen. By using this application, first aid kit can be used by
maximize the usage. People will know what to do for each component in first aid kit.
3

Indirectly, this application will give the valuable knowledge to the user and it may save
our life.

1.2 Purpose and Description

The first aid android application is an android- based application designed for
Metro Rescue Volunteer
● First aid Information – The application provides the common emergency
case name, videos and including images.
● Quiz- to determine what you have learned in the application
● Emergency contact number

1.3 Objective of the Study

The general objective of the study is to design, develop a system First Aid

1.4 Scope and Limitations of the Project

The study focuses in first aid of the Metro Rescue Volunteer the project
can defined as what is needed to complete in a project to deliver a product, service
and the result. In this particular project it mainly focused on the first aid introduction
and including the diagnosis, treatment and disposal.

For diagnosis, the user must first know how the accident or sudden injury has
occurred. This can be got for from the victim if he can tell or from witnesses. We
called it as the history of the circumstance. The next step is the user need to see the
4

symptoms such as asthma, heart attack, animal bits, burns, black eyes, blister, chest
pain, heat attack. Then the user looks at the signs which are differences from normal
conditions.

The proposed study were able to present information content form video, text and
images. The application will be share with Bluetooth to be accessible to the user and
other interested in first aid and run in any android mobile phones, tablets and any
android devices with an operation system of android.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter contains the literature used by the researchers to support their study.
Review of literature and related system enable the researchers to support the concepts of
their project.

2.1 RELATED LITERATURE

Local
According to Oscar Palabyab, Philippine Red Cross (PRC) secretary general in
the World First Aid Day, that most of the deaths involving kids were due to accidents
such as drowning, animal bites, falls, burns, suffocation and bleeding in which they were
not given a first aid. Due to lack of knowledge and initial practice of first aid, 150,000
people could die every year (Guardian, 2010). Therefore, it is highly essential that
everyone learn the simply essential skills to stop potential dangers and to response
properly as soon as unsafe or adverse situations happen.

According to Guardian (2010) approximately 150,000 people per year died

because first aid was not widely known. On this, Joseph (2014), asserted that the level of
knowledge of first aid among majority of the students are lacking. Furthermore, hundreds
of thousands of children die each year due to injuries from violence, while millions of
others suffer the consequences of less or non-fatal injuries. Afar from the deaths, tens of
millions of children require hospitalization for non-fatal injuries, (Branche et al., 2008).

First aid promotes a healthy, secure and a safer environment, and instills
confidence among people, their colleagues and associates. Basic first aid knowledge is
very helpful in dealing with trauma situations. Not just the medical they provide, but the
confidence they exhibit is very helpful during causalities. Being trained to provide first
aid is useful to oneself and society. (Halstead, 2019).

2.2 RELATED STUDIES

Foreign
According to the St John Ambulance Association's statement about the purpose of
first aid, it should (1) preserve life, (2) prevent deterioration, and (3) promote recovery
(St John Ambulance, 2016). Two of the many possible examples available in the
literature, of cases where bystander first aid was needed, are the following:

A 17-year-old boy was in a motorcycle accident with no serious injuries, his heart
stopped, and no bystander performed CPR, resulting in the boy's death (St John
Ambulance, 2010)
6

A 4-year-old boy suffered a swimming pool accident and was resuscitated by young, off-
duty lifeguards (American Red Cross, 2016a)

First aid is characterized as the immediate assessment and interventions

performed with minimal or no medical equipment’s by a bystander. First aid also can be
defined as a set of mostly basic measures to provide immediate emergency treatment of
painful injury or life threatening cardiac or respiratory crises. While according to
Malaysian Red Crescent, first aid is the care given to injured person or suddenly becomes
ill immediately. First aid can be lifesaving and limit damage until the arrival of help from
expert. At work, school, home, and in public locations, first aid can be an effective life-
preservation tool. Both articles highlight the vital of first aid in saving life in their
definitions of first aid. Thus, administration of first aid minimized the injury
consequences.

According to Malaysian Red Crescent, first aid is the rapid and fast care given
to people who are injured or becomes ill suddenly. Therefore, first aid is just not
important for accidents or injuries but also important in people who suddenly
become ill like cardiac arrest, epistaxis, choking, and many more. Furthermore,
Malaysian Red Crescent, describe that if individuals are equipped with basic first aid
knowledge, they could save a person life. A study found that it is vital to make sure
that individuals get enough training to handle with such events including university
students as the incidences of emergencies is steadily increasing nowadays.

2.3 Synthesis:

The analysis of the collected data revealed that Mobile learning was more
effective than the use of traditional teaching methods in helping students enrolled in
"Strategies of Teaching and Learning" course to achieve better and develop their English
language conversational skills.

METHODOLOGY

The project used the System development Life cycle (SDLC) using Rapid
Application Development (RAD). RAD is methodology for compressing the analysis,
design, build and test phases into series of short, iterative development cycles.

Figure 2. Rapid Application Development

The project used the Rapid Application Development (RAD). It is software

development methodology that uses minimal planning in favour of rapid prototyping.
RAD is a methodology for compressing the analysis, design, build, and phases into series
of short development cycles. The planning software development using RAD is
interleaved with writing the software itself. The lack of intensive pre-planning generally
allows software to be written much faster, and makes it easier to change requirements.

4.8 Evaluation

The researchers used Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to determine how users
come to accept and use a technology. The model suggests that when the users are
presented with a new technology, a number of factors influence their decision about
how and when they will use it.
The User Acceptance Testing (UAT) was also conducted by the researchers, user
acceptance testing is the usage of the software by people from the intended audience
and recording and correcting of any defects which are discovered. It gives user the
chance to interact with the software and find out if everything works as it should if
features have been overlooked, miscommunicated, not communicated and so on.
The researchers used likert scale to determine, evaluate and to give feedback to
the system. According to Likert 1932 formula and interpreting the result is shown
below. This has been used to determine whether the respondents rated “Strong Agree
(SA)”, “Agree (A)”, “Undecided (U)”, “Disagree (DA)”, and “Strongly Disagree
(SD)”.
