Introduction

Background of the Study

Today’s school year the Learning mode of education changes. This rapid

changes increased complexity to the world presents put new challenges and new

demand on the students as the educational system adjusts. A Novel Corona Virus

outbreak that was first discovered in Wuhan , Hubei Province of China in December

2019, which has immediately spread all over the world and declared as a worldwide

pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 2020 (Wikipedia,2020).

Coronavirus are large family of zoonotic virus that cause illness that can be

transmitted from animals to humans. With a global pandemic, it affects students of all

grades, it caused difficulties to the students in their studies since only this year the

students were experienced this new normal in learning. However despite the situation

facing the world, the students are still enthusiastic and blessed because amidst the

virus, they will be able to continue their studies and fulfill their dreams in life.

Moving forward, In order to continue the education of the students, the

Department of Education. (DepEd) implemented the Modular Distance Learning to

provide quality education and an effective and efficient education among the

students. However, students were adaptability struggling since the students were

accustomed for having a face to face classes plus the fact that face to face is more

suitable for the students workflows. Additionally classroom learning helps students

and teachers know each other in a better manner and allows the teacher to evaluate
the strengths and weaknesses of the students, to acts as a mentor and guide students

to improve the quality of their lives. Moreover, it helps students follow a regular

schedule, become more disciplined, improves physical fitness and mental alertness.

In fact, face to face classes students can directly share their perception and

elucidate their own queries with the teacher, and answered their questions promptly.

Also, it helps students to get rid of the fear in the activities or exams that will be doing

and helps students motivate to achieve higher marks.

Although, t since we has different status in life and not everyone were blessed

to have a proper well living. Consequently, this new learning mode greatly affects the

students mental health. Mental Health is a state of well-being in which individual

perceived his own abilities, can work productively and fruitfully to cope with the

stresses of life (Wikipedia 2010). It includes subject perceived self-efficacy, autonomy

for the capacity to make own decisions in life, competence to do something efficiently,

and self realization of ones intellectual and emotional potential among others. Also,

includes ability to enjoy life and to create a balance between life activities and efforts

to achieve psychological resiliency.

Going forward, students were struggling on this new distance in learning and

severely affected the students mental health. Students are sacrificing sleeps just to do

the unlimited modules however it is not easy to finish a many modules in a day since

in a one module has so many tasks to do and there are some essays that other

students were hard to do due to the lack of ideas and debilitated in doing it . Todays

generation social media is the most prominent that all peoples uses, to connect with

friends, families, teachers and such, it also used to have an access in learning of the

students in such matters, it uses to gather information that will be needed in the
study of the students. However not all student are in connected, some of the students

don’t have gadgets and stable internet connections making difficult for the learners to

keep in pace therefore, students are arduous to keep up in their class especially when

teachers are sending google docs or exams in online to be filled, thus students are

become stress that cause for the students problem in mental health , due to the stress

students were no longer enjoy and not in focused on they learning, as a result

students feels left behind that causing overthinking and worrying, creates feeling of

distress and restlessness that lead for depression. Also, students were pressured of

their parents and some students don’t have proper and secured place in learning.

Plus the fact that everyone has responsibilities in home and some students are

working due to the poverty.

This research study conduct is to gives students awareness to help them

understand and wider up their perceptions about mental health. Students will be

more aware about this kind of mental disorders. They could perceived their mental

health education on what they do to prevent. Also, this study helps students to cope

up their difficulties encountered in todays new normal in education and to break the

health stigma among students who are undergo with this. Moreover, this study aimed

to document some relevant stories of the students who are confidently surpass this

mental health issues amidst new distance learning in education.

Statement of the Problem

The  study  “Effects  of  Modular Distance  Learning  Modalities  to the

Mental Health of Grade 11 GAS A Students” aimed to identify the difficulties


encountered in todays new distance in learning and its effects to the Mental Health

of Grade 11 GAS A Students.

In particular, this study seeks to answer the following question.

1.What  are  the  difficulties  encountered  by  the  Grade  11  Gas  students  in  new  

normal  in  education? 

2.What  are  the  effects  of  these  difficulties  to  the  mental  health  of  the

respondents? 

3.What  can  be  proposed  to  help  the  respondents  cope  with  the  difficulties  they

encountered  in  the  new  normal?

Scope and Delimitation

This study dealt on knowing the difficulties encountered of Grade 11

GAS students todays new distance learning system and how it affects to the

mental health of the students. The key purpose of this study is to find out the

difficulties encountered and its effects to the Mental health among the students during

academic year 2020-2021.These challenges and difficulties encountered of the

students were identified by conducting surveys to the selected students of Cabangan

High School.
The respondents will be limited to all Grade 11 students who are in GAS A

section of Cabangan High School, Cabangan Legazpi City. Moreover, other

experiences of the students that is not part in our research study were excluded.

Significance of the Study This  research  conduct  will  be  beneficial  to

the  following  group  of  people. This  will  be  their  references  in  determining  the

effects  of mental  health  to  the  new learning  education  system. 

Students. Mental health effects students nowadays . Students are

pressured because of their academics, high expectations of their loveones and

financial problem. This problem will give them stress and anxiety that will lead

to depression. Studying mental health awareness will help them to understand

and widen their perception about mental health. Students will be aware about

this kind of mental disorder. They could perceive their mental education on

what they need to do to prevent this kind of illness. Studying about mental

health keeps on individual aware of their emotional stability. This will keep

them motivated in handling stress and keep their life happy and become

optimistic beyond crisis.

Parents. Important role in child’s life. Studying mental health will make

them aware health. Parents were able to guide and help their children to do

in order to prevent it. Since some parents always expects excessive expectation

in studying. Mental health awareness will give them knowledge about the effects

of it and in other hand they will know what their children feel.
Teachers. Teaching is the most stressful profession. They are obliged to

manage high levels of stress of their students. Given the pressures, teachers

are required to work under pressure, under inequality especially economically,

increasing mental health issue for students, declining resources and increasing

demands of their job specifically nowadays that we are experiencing pandemic.

The teachers are being forced to go beyond their limitations in such a way

that they’d getting drained by their responsibilities in their school activities.

Improving mental health in school is one of the effects of knowing the various

mental health issues. The administration and teachers somewhat become aware

of the results of the mental issue therefore they will prioritize the wellness of

the teachers and the learners as well. They have to be aware that ensuring in

getting enough sleep and healthy eating habits may boost their energy as well

as keeping in touch with each other and having a collaboration and discussion

with each other may reduce the stress. This may improve their relationship,

and health in boosting their consciousness towards the mental health issues,

they will become sentient in what are the actions that they are going to make

a better way.

Future Researchers. This study will help and guide the future

researchers in conducting a study in the future. This will be their source of

information to have ample knowledge about the effects of mental health to the

new educational system.

Researchers themselves. This conduct the researchers will help students

to prevent undergoing mental health issues and allowed to fully understand

mental health. Moreover, this study helps researchers themselves to be more


aware about mental health its effects and on how to cope to this encountered

difficulties.
