PROPERTIES OF FILES AND DIRECTORIES
On this page, we will look at the following features and concepts related to files and
directories:
Files and directories
Naming practices
Paths
File types
Data size units
Managing file and folder views
NAME
Think carefully about how you name your files. Use descriptive file names so that
even years later you will be able to recognize the contents of the file by its name. Avoid
abbreviations and, instead, use whole words. For example, a file name like “Cultural
encounters” is better than “Cult”.
The naming conventions for files and directories vary by operating system: in
Windows, for example, the dot in the file name is usually followed by a file extension
consisting of one or several characters that indicate the file type. In Linux, on the other
hand, no extension is necessary.
Depending on the system, it may not be possible to use certain special characters (:
> / * ? ” > |) in the file name. In addition, using a space or Scandinavian umlauts (å, ä, ö)
may sometimes cause problems, especially over the Internet. If you have trouble posting
files online, try removing special characters from the name.
In Linux, the use of UPPER CASE and lower case letters in file names makes a
difference; e.g. Ray.txt is different from ray.txt. In Windows, upper and lower case letters
can be used more freely.
PATHS
A string of text that shows the location of a file or directory is called a Path. The path
to a single file on the hard drive of your home computer (in Windows) can be
e.g.:C:\Users\rkeskiva\Studies\Study diary.docx
3
The path shows that a file called Study diary.docx is located on drive C in a
subdirectory called Studies and stuff that belongs to user “rkeskiva”. The same information
can be presented graphically:
FILE TYPES
A file can contain different kinds of material: text, video, and so forth. When the
contents of a file are saved in a certain generally known format, it is called a file type.
Photographs, for example, are often stored as JPEG image files, and word processing
documents as DOCX or RTF document files.
In Windows, the file type is evident from the file extension (usually consisting of three
letters) that follows the dot in the file name. The file extension indicates the format in which
the data in the file has been stored.

directories/features-of-files-and-directories/.)
Data is saved in binary form, i.e. as numbers consisting of ones and zeros. The
smallest data storage unit – the bit (b) – can receive the value 1 or 0. When several bits are
combined in a row, they form a byte (B). A byte may look like this, for example: “01011001”.
If you type the word “data” on your computer, it consists of four bytes (each letter usually
consists of one byte).
The storage capacity is specified as the maximum number of bytes that the storage
media can hold.
4
The storage capacity is often so large that it is described as follows:
If you want to check when the file was originally created (Date Created), right-click
the file and select Properties from the menu that opens. The creation and modification
dates are then shown as follows:

directories/features-of-files-and-directories/.)
5
The same options can be accessed via the View menu, which can be displayed by
pressing the Alt key on the keyboard.
You can sort files and folders by clicking the headings above the list. For example, to
sort files by their date of modification, click the Date Modified heading (see the image
above). You can reverse the order of the files by clicking the heading again.
Touch typing is all about the idea that each finger has its area on the keyboard.
Thanks to that fact you can type without looking at the keys. Practice regularly and your
fingers will learn their location on the keyboard through muscle memory.
Curve your fingers a little and put them on the ASDF and JKL; keys which are located
in the middle row of the letter keys. This row is called HOME ROW because you always start
from these keys and always return to them.
F and J keys under your index fingers should have a raised line on them to aid in
finding these keys without looking.
6
Keyboard scheme
The color-coded keyboard under the lesson input field will help you to understand
which finger should press each key.
Hit keys only with the fingers for which they have been reserved.
Always return to the starting position of the fingers "ASDF – JKL;".
When typing, imagine the location of the symbol on the keyboard.
Establish and maintain a rhythm while typing. Your keystrokes should come at equal
intervals.
The SHIFT key is always pressed by the pinky finger opposite to the one hitting the
other key.
Use the thumb of whichever hand is more convenient for you to press the Space bar.
This method may seem inconvenient at first, but do not stop, eventually, you'll find
out that you are typing quickly, easily, and conveniently. To achieve the maximum
result, choose a touch typing course for your keyboard layout and in the desired language.

What are the most helpful computer peripherals for business?
1. External Monitor
2. Graphics tablet
3. Presenter Mouse
4. Printer
What is Printer?
A printer is a hardware output device that is used to generate hard copies and print
any document. A document can be of any type such as a text file, image, or a combination
of both. It accepts input commands by users on a computer or on other devices to print the
documents. For example, if you have to submit a project report at your college, you need to
create a soft copy of your report and print it with the help of the printer.
Printers are one of the common computer peripheral devices that can be classified
into two categories that are 2D and 3D printers. The 2D printers are used to print text and
graphics on paper, and 3D printers are used to create three-dimensional physical objects.
Types of printer
Although there are different types of printers, nowadays, two types of printers are
commonly used, which are inkjet and laser printers.
Inkjet Printers
It is widely used by home and business computer users that print characters by
spraying the ink using magnetic plates on the paper. It contains a paper feed assembly, ink
cartridge, print head, stabilizer bar, and belt.
Laser printers
The laser printer is one of the common personal computer printers. It was introduced
in 1971, and after that, it was developed at Xerox PARC by Gary Starkweather. It uses laser
or non-impact photocopier technology to print the text and images on paper. Whenever it
gets input to print any document, a laser beam draws the document on the selenium-coated
drum with the help of electric charges.
When the drum is charged, it is rolled in toner (dry ink powder). The ink follows the
image, which has charged on the drum. The ink is combined with the paper, including heat
and pressure, then transferred on a chunk (piece) of paper.
3D Printers
One of the best enhancements in the history of printing
technology is the 3d printer, which was developed by Chuck
Hull in 1984. It produces 3D objects and items by using quality
resin. It uses materials like plastics, polymers, metal alloys, or
even food ingredients.
LED Printers
The LED printer is mostly like a laser printer. It uses the
drum, ink, and fuser system to print the black or colored
documents. Initially, Casio and function developed the LED printers by focusing light
throughout the whole length of the drum. These types of printers are non-impact, but
instead of using a laser in the printhead, they use a light-emitting diode. These printers
were invented by the manufacturer OKI in 1989.
