Teaching Models Research

The document discusses several teaching models: 1) The guided discovery model helps students feel connected while promoting critical thinking through teacher guidance and examples. 2) The concept attainment model reinforces concepts and critical thinking for all ages through whole or small group introduction and scientific method. 3) The integrative model helps students develop deep understanding and critical thinking skills through a collection of knowledge similar to guided discovery. 4) Problem-based learning is student-directed for deeper inquiry into topics presented and connecting concepts to real-world problems through developed critical thinking.

Teaching Models

Guided Discovery model: A presentation from the teacher with examples of

specific topics while guiding students to understand that topic. This model helps
students feel welcome, connected to their teacher and peers, and competent which
increases their motivation. This model will also keep students motivated and
engaged as a whole class in small groups and or individually. This model also
promoted critical thinking. Teachers can assess students’ understanding by having
a whole class discussion.

Concept attainment model: This model is designed to elaborate and reinforce

students’ understanding of concepts and practice critical thinking. This model can
be taught to all ages. This model can be introduced as a whole group or small group.
This model works best with elementary students. This model introduces students
to the scientific method as well as increases their motivation to learn science.

Integrative model: This model helps students develop a deep understanding of a

collection of knowledge while developing critical thinking skills. This model is
closely related to the guided discovery model, which is designed to help students
learn more in-depth.

Problem-based learning: A teaching tool that puts students in control of learning.

This model is student-directed instead teacher directed. This model allows
students to explore and make deeper inquiries into topics that the teacher
presents to them. This model also allows students to connect the real world to
concepts of learning. Students will be able to use this developed critical thinking to
help them solve real-life problems.

Direct Instruction model: This model is teacher-centered, students learn from

presentations or demonstrations from the teacher. This model approach may not
always be the best way to promote critical thinking, but this model may improve
basic skills, such as remembering content. With the continuous growth of this
model, teachers can monitor their student’s progress toward learning goals.
Lecture-discussion model: This model is a teacher-centered approach to students.
This model also helps students understand a collection of knowledge while actively
involving students using comprehension monitoring and questioning. This helps
students understand concepts and how they are related.

Discussion Model

Discussion Model, two-way communication between teacher and students. Teachers

spend time listening while the students spend some time talking. Therefore, this
model is a more active learning experience for students. The discussion model also
promotes active participation. Whether through group discussions or the entire
class, learners are capable of actively participating in a discussion. The use of
discussions allows learners to explore a topic more deeply than simply reading
about it or listening to a lecture about the topic. Through discussions, small
aspects and details can be explored that might be ignored with other teaching
methods. By driving deeper through their questions and comments, learners engage
at a level that helps ensure they fully comprehend the topic under discussion. This
method is an excellent strategy for enhancing learner motivation, fostering
intellectual agility, and the ability to articulate and defend positions, consider
different points of view, enlist, and evaluate evidence. When using this model there
will be advantages, such as how to reconcile opposing arguments, how to think on
one’s feet, and how to overcome the fear of sharing individual opinions by building
relationships among classmates and sparking students’ interest and engagement in
topics. Now, the disadvantage of teaching with a discussion model, students who
are shy, intimidated, or scared of saying the wrong thing in front of groups will
often sit in silence.
