Assignment 2

1. The document discusses using the cumulative differences approach (CDA) and minimization of sum of squared errors (MinSSE) approach to segment a runway pavement into homogeneous sections based on deflection data. The student is asked to apply both approaches to the provided deflection data and output the results in a table with section details. 2. For each approach, the student must compare it to parametric, non-parametric, or Bayesian methods and discuss the suitability of each for identifying homogeneous sections from pavement condition data. The results of each proposed method should also be compared to the original CDA or MinSSE approach. 3. The CDA procedure is to be automated with the given conditions and tabulated

Assignment 2 (10 marks)

1. In the class, we discussed the cumulative differences approach (CDA – as used by AASHTO)
to delineate the pavement stretch into homogenous sections based on pavement condition data.
I used the first 540 m of deflection data collected at 20 m interval on a runway. Adopt the same
approach and delineate the entire runway into homogeneous sections with suitable assumptions.
Introduce the following conditions into the procedure. (a) minimum length Lmin of a
homogeneous section is 50 m; (b) minimum difference between the mean values of adjacent
segments ∆min, compare the mean with the appropriate test statistic. You can use excel or any
other suitable tool to delineate. Your submission should include the table of the format below,
along with the solution.
Section No. Ch. start Ch. End Length (m) Mean deflection (microns)

In the class, we discussed homogeneous segmentation using parametric

analysis with a likelihood ratio as a test parameter. Compare the CDA approach with any
parametric or non-parametric, or Bayesian approach in terms of suitability to identify the
homogeneous section from pavement condition data. Compare the results of the proposed
approach with the CDA approach.
2. In the class, we discussed Minimization Sum of Squared Error (MinSSE) method to delineate
the pavement stretch into homogenous sections based on pavement condition data. I used the
first 540 m of deflection data collected at 20 m interval on the runway. Adopt the same approach
and delineate the entire runway into the homogeneous section with suitable assumptions.

homogeneous section is 50 m; (b) minimum difference between the mean values of adjacent
segments ∆min or compare the mean with the appropriate test statistic. You can use excel or

below, along with the solution.
Section No. Ch. start Ch. End Length (m) Mean deflection (microns)

In the class, we discussed the homogeneous segmentation using parametric

analysis with likelihood ratio as test parameter. Compare the MinSSE approach with any
parametric or non-parametric or Bayesian approach in terms of suitability to identify the
homogeneous section from pavement condition data. Compare the results of the proposed
approach with MinSSE approach.
3. Automate the CDA delineation procedure with conditions mentioned in (1) and tabulate the
results for the given deflection data.
4. Automate the MinSSE delineation procedure with conditions mentioned in (1) and tabulate the
results for the given deflection data.
