Basic Thermodynamics

Exam No. 5
Ideal Gas Processes

Name: Dante, Christian Joie C.

Student No. 20111148244

Problem No. 1:

In pVk = C process, helium expands from P1 = 1664 kPag to P2 = 644 kPag, V2 = 306
m3/hr and T2 = 278 K. Find: (a) t1 in deg C and ΔH in kJ/min ; (b) WNF and WSF in kJ/min
if ΔPE = 2 kJ/s and ΔKE = 1 kJ/s.
Problem No. 2:

49.3 m3/min of a gas (R = 300 J/kg.K) expands in accordance with pV = C from 0.294
kg/m3 to 0.07 kg/m3 and 0 kPag. Find: (a) the heat in kJ/min; (b) WNF and WSF (kJ/min)
with an initial velocity of 600 m/min and final velocity of 3000 m/min and ΔPE = 20 kJ/s.
Problem No. 3:

A gas, initially at 517.2 kPaa and 142 liters, undergoes a process to 172.4 kPaa and
274 liters during which enthalpy decreases 65.4 kJ. The specific heats are constant;
Cv= 3.157 kJ/kg K, find change in internal energy, Cp and R.
Problem No. 4:

(a) A piston-cylinder set-up contains 0.015 kg of an ideal gas at a volume of 1 liter, a

temperature of 5.5 deg C and a pressure of 685 kPaa. The gas is heated at constant
pressure to 1.75 liters. If the total heat input for the process was 2.78 kJ, find Cv of this
gas.

(b) 1.5 kg of an ideal gas undergoes a process wherein the pressure decreases from 280
kPaa to 140 kPaa, while the volume increases from 0.045 cu.m to 0.135 cu.m. If the
increase in internal energy for the process is 275 kJ and Cv =1.235 kJ/kg.K, find t2 in
deg C.
