Lesson Library Tools

The ability to gather information and the ability to organize gathered
information are two main study skills. To be able to gather information, one must
have knowledge on the effective use of the library which is supposed to be the main
source of printed references. Information gathered must be organized, and to do this
requires knowledge of summarizing, outlining and notetaking.

What is It

One of the most useful places in the school is the library. Almost everything
in it is free. The library is a free entrance to almost any place you would wish to visit.
The newspapers, magazines, records and books that are available in the library
provide you with all the facts and information you need.
This is now the time to expand your horizon about the lessons on using the
different library tools such as card catalog, parts of a book and general references
which will be very beneficial to improve your reading and research skills.

A. Types of Card Catalog

1. Author Catalog
The author catalog is a type of card catalog organized by the last name of the
author. If more than one author collaborated on the book, the author listed first is
the one who appears on the card catalog. Other authors' names may be included
depending on the space available. After the author's name, the title of the book and
publishing information are listed. The bottom of the card contains a list of three to
five main subjects that correspond with the book. The card in the author catalog also
contains information on how to find this book in the library, usually in the form of a
specific call number.

2.Title Catalog
The title card catalog provides an easy way for a person to find a specific book
or multimedia holding by its title. The title card catalog contains all of the same
information that the author catalog contains, but the information is rearranged on
each card entry. Instead of the author listed at the top of the card, the title of the
book is listed, then the author's name, publishing information and subjects.

3. Subject Catalog
The subject card catalog organizes all of the library holdings by the main
subjects of the title. Because titles often fall under more than one subject category,
the library may choose to have multiple entries for the same book. Other libraries
choose to only list a single main subject in capital letters on the top of the card for
each book in the subject card catalog.

7
Parts of a Card Catalog

1. Call number
All print or paper copies of books in the library are assigned a call number,
usually found on the book spine. The call number represents what the book is
about and acts like the book's address on the library's shelves or stacks.
2. Author
An author is the creator or originator of any written work such as a book or
play, and is also considered a writer. More broadly defined, an author is "the person
who originated or gave existence to anything" and whose authorship determines
responsibility for what was created.
3. Title
The name of a book, composition, or other artistic work
4. Subtitle
The subtitle of a piece of writing is a second title which is often longer
and explains more than the main title.
5. Publisher
A person or company that prepares and issues books, journals,
music, or other works for sale.
6. Place of publication
The place of publication is the "name of the city where the publisher
is located." The place can be found on the title page or verso of the title page.
It is not necessary to identify the state, province, or country after the city
name
7. Date of publication
The date of publication is the date the published material became
generally available
8. Page number
The number of pages of the book.
9. Accession Number
A sequential number assigned to each record or volume as it is added
to a database (such as a library catalog or index) and which indicates the
chronological order of its acquisition.
10. Illustration
An illustration is a decoration, interpretation or visual explanation of
a text, concept or process, designed for integration in published media,
such as posters, flyers, magazines, books, teaching materials, animations,
video games and films

8
B. Major Parts of a Book

Book is a medium for recording information in the form of writing or images,

typically composed of many pages (made of papyrus, parchment, vellum,
or paper) bound together and protected by a cover.[1] The technical term for
this physical arrangement is codex (plural, codices). A single sheet in a codex
is a leaf and each side of a leaf is a page.
