PART B – DEVELOP AND COMMUNICATE A POLICY

Case study continued…

The Best Bite received approval for the liquor licence. You have developed a responsible service
of alcohol policy; however, you have identified the need for a ‘’Drug and Alcohol Policy’’ so that
there are clear guidelines in place for all employees regarding alcohol consumption and the use
of other drugs in the workplace.
You have organised a meeting with the other business owner to discuss and develop the policy.

1. Meet with your co-owner of the Best Bite to discuss the issue (role played by one classmate).
 Review current legislation and codes of practice relating to drugs and alcohol in the
workplace.
 Review the Marino Enterprises Style Guide.
 Together, develop a clear policy that all staff must follow, including persons responsible.
Ensure that the policy is written in line with the Marino Enterprises Style Guide.

Protect the health and welfare of the workforce while adhering to all applicable rules and
regulations on drugs and alcohol in the workplace. Avoid locations where there is drink or drugs
available. Establish a secure work environment. Encourage morally upright conduct.
This code's objective is to simplify workplace drug and alcohol management, prevention, and
reduction. The code includes suggestions for promoting employment, improving efficiency and
productivity at work, assisting local, regional, and national efforts to reduce alcohol and drug abuse
at work, and safeguarding the health and safety of all employees. Additionally, it suggests using
safety experts to promote coordination and collaboration between government agencies,
enterprises, employees, and their representatives. Legislation and national policy on the
prevention, reduction, and management of alcohol- and drug-related issues in the workplace
should be formulated after consulting with the most influential employers' and workers' groups as
well as other specialists.

2. Distribute the new policy.

 Write a covering email to introduce the new policy to all employees.
 Send the email and attached policy to the employees of the Best Bite Café (your assessor).
