Smart Care An Augmented IoT Mobile Based Smart e Health Monitoring and Alerting System

This document presents a proposal for an IoT mobile-based smart e-health monitoring and alert system. The system will monitor patients' pulse rate, body temperature, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and body position. It will also monitor room humidity, temperature, air quality, and IV fluid levels. The amount and frequency of vibration on patients' beds will also be monitored. Data will be sent to a web server and viewed through a mobile app. An SMS alert will notify authorized users of abnormal readings. The system aims to help healthcare workers monitor more patients remotely, reduce virus spread, and improve emergency response times. It will use wireless data transmission and real-time visualization to achieve these goals.

Introduction

Background of the Study

In recent years, the concerns regarding the COVID-19 virus have led to an

increase in health-related issues due to a rapid widespread spread of the COVID-19

virus which we are suffering from right now. This situation leads to the

development of new ideas and health-related monitoring concepts. The

implementation of a healthcare monitoring system is currently receiving a lot more

attention as a way to reduce the possibility of acquiring the virus. Numerous

hospitals in more developed nations appear to quickly implement online health

care, regulators lifted telemedicine prohibitions, and users embraced the

technology, many of them for the first time as a response to the escalating health

crisis that we are currently facing (Webster, 2020). The Internet of Things (IoT)

came into play as it gained popularity starting in the summer of 2010, becoming

widely implemented by various organizations, including clinical settings like

hospitals, to assist healthcare professionals by monitoring patients' vital signs. The

integration of IoT devices for monitoring purposes into the web provides people

with an idea of the patient's condition via real-time updates and this method of

online monitoring could assist the government in flattening the curve and being

used in the expansion of innovations by health professionals.

9

Moreover, Some organizations, particularly those in the medical sector, such

as hospitals, are using healthcare monitoring systems nowadays to enhance the

monitoring services. IoT mobile-based healthcare monitoring system serves as an

extension for health practitioners to monitor their patient’s condition using an

android mobile application. Related studies can implement an IoT-based health

monitoring system to check for vital signs, but the number of sensors being used to

check for a patient's condition does not seem to be enough since it only detects the

patient's body temperature and pulse rate, hence, the use of additional sensors is

needed to gather more accurate data to be further analyzed. Various sensors,

including blood pressure, weight, blood glucose, and/or physical activity sensors,

are used in the transition of medical services from clinical settings, such as hospitals,

to in-home monitoring setting for RMS or Room Monitoring Systems, which are

often used to monitor patient's physiological conditions (Lan et al., 2012). The

hands-on treatments, enhanced accuracy, appropriate medical intervention, and

better overall patient care delivery outcomes are made possible by real-time

alerting, tracking, and monitoring made feasible by IoT.

Statement of the Problem

Health issues nowadays are very crucial due to the COVID-19 pandemic

which we are currently experiencing. A sudden increase in the number of patients in

the hospital leads to a delayed diagnoses response of healthcare workers to patients

which may also lead to an emergency due to a large number of patients to be

monitored causing a lack of information on patients' health conditions. Some of the

10

problems associated with HCWs or healthcare workers that are emotionally tired

include medical malpractice, a lack of empathy when treating patients, poor

productivity, and larger turnover rates (Penwell-Waines et al., 2018). Moreover,

new measures are being implemented to stop the virus from spreading, one of

which is limiting the number of visitors allowed in the patient's room and

shortening the allowed stay for visitors and due to this, some of the patient's family

members won't be aware of the patient's condition.

An IoT Mobile-based smart e-health Monitoring and alerting system that uses

a more different variety of monitoring sensors as compared to other past related

studies used to collect and monitor the patient’s health and room condition for

better results will be much more useful to the present situation and having it

viewable in an android mobile application for the real-time update of the patient’s

condition is in need in today’s hospital situation and also taking into considerations

on minimizing the risk of having direct contact towards other people as it continues

to find new ways to lessen the spread of infections.

Objectives of the Study

This project aims to design an IoT Mobile based Smart e-health Monitoring and

alerting system to monitor the patient and room condition in the hospital by measuring

the pulse rate, body temperature, oxygen saturation, and patient’s body position that

would detect falls if there is a rapid change in position, moreover, humidity, temperature,

amount of IV fluid in percent, and air quality of the patient’s room will be also collected
11

for further monitoring purposes and in addition to that is the amount and frequency of

vibration on the patient’s bed will be monitored also to check if the patient’s body is

shaking. Moreover, an SMS notification will be sent to authorized users that serves as an

alert whenever there is an unusual result in the patient's status. All of this information

will be sent to the webserver to be accessible online using an android mobile application.

This proposed system is useful for the need for wireless data transmission and real-time

visualization of data.

Mainly, this study will:

● Develop a user-friendly patient and room monitoring mobile application

system

● Integrate IoT devices for monitoring purposes and the following data will

be collected:

○ Patient

■ Pulse-Rate

■ Body Temperature

■ Oxygen Saturation

■ Respiratory Rate

■ Body Position

○ Room

■ Humidity

■ Temperature

■ Air Quality
12

■ IV Fluid amount

○ Patient’s bed

■ Amount and frequency of vibration

● Conclude and present related diseases based on the gathered information

● Integrate the GSM module for alerting purposes

Through this proposed system using a wireless data transmission, people now can

monitor the health condition of their loved ones as well as allow healthcare workers to

update patient’s health status within the app, minimizing the danger of virus infection and

enhancing the reaction time of nurses and doctors in emergencies without having a lot of

effort.
