INTRODUCTION
Following the devasting flood on 7th and 8th August 2002, a Waagner-Biro emergency
bridge was made available to the village Stallegg in the destroyed Kamp valley in
lower Austria for four months. On Friday, 23rd August, the steel structure was erected
next to the road B34 by members of the Austrian Army.
On 7th and 8th August 2002, the old bridge, which had connected the village
Stallegg/Rosenburg in the district of Horn with the state road B34, was seriously damaged
by underwashing the pier foundations. Stallegg was nearly totally cut off from civilisation and
could not even be reached by emergency vehicles.
Already on 9th August 2002, first meetings were held together with the mayor of
Stallegg/Rosenburg, and together with the Austrian Army and the concerned road
administration an individual solution to the problem was sought. The final decision to erect
the emergency bridge was made by the village Stallegg/Rosenburg on Monday, 19th August
2002. Already 3 days later, on Thursday, 22nd August, 3 lorries of the Austrian Army carried
the parts of the bridge to Stallegg. On Friday, 23rd August, 7:30 a.m. 30 soldiers of the “3rd
company, engineer battalion I Carinthia (Austria)”, started to erect the bridge. The erection of
the bridge was completed successfully within one day only.
Thanks to Waagner-Biro´s efforts, road traffic to Stallegg was re-established, whilst at the
same time enabling the repair works for the old bridge to be completed.
The steel emergency bridge in Stallegg had a span of 31.5 m, a deck width of 4.35 m and
allowed for loading with one lorry of 16 tonnes and a udl of 400 kg/m² (“Brückenklasse II”
according to the pertinent Austrian Standard ÖNorm B 4002). After AASHTO specification,
the bridge is able to carry HS25-44 loading. The bridge system is based on modular,
prefabricated components, which can be combined by simple means of connection to allow
for flexible adaptation to individual spans and loads as well as for very short time of erection.
Fields of application for such bridge systems are cases of emergency or pioneer bridges.
