Name: Venus Rovie C.

Laque Subject: Purposive Communication

Course: BSHM1

MODULE 1 AND TOPIC 1: LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Task 1: Comprehensive Questions: Instruction: Check your understanding of the input by

answering the following questions:

1. Can animals communicate?

ANS: Animals might not be able to speak or master advanced language techniques, but
they certainly have other ways of communicating. Whale song, wolf howls, frog croaks, bird
chips -- even the waggle dance of the honeybee or the vigorous waving of a dog's tail --
are among the panoply of ways animals transmit information to each other and to other
denizens of the animal kingdom.
2. Can monkeys produce language?
ANS: Yes, They use their bodies to say, and they are also smart, we belong to monkeys I
just studied that in our subject.
3. What is the difference between language acquisition and language learning?
ANS: Even though they sound almost the same, language acquisition and language
learning is two different things. They aren’t completely different though because both of
them are somehow connected to learning a language. Here is an overview of the main
differences between language acquisition and language learning. Language acquisition is a
natural process, while language learning is intentional. Language acquisition doesn’t rely
on grammar rules and patterns, that is, a person doesn’t learn grammar and other
language skills the way language learners do. Language learning includes a learning
process where a person is aware of the importance of all language skills, from learning to
read and write to improving vocabulary. In language acquisition a person, that is, a kid
usually controls the learning path, while in language learning that part of control is on the
teacher. Language acquisition starts from an early age, usually at home, where repetition is
absolutely necessary. Language learning usually doesn’t start from an early age, and it can
happen at home, but not necessarily. Language learners are aware of their learning
process and their intention to improve it, even on a daily basis.
4. What is the difference between first language and social second language?
ANS: The key difference between first language and second language is their acquisition.
The first language is the language one learns first, and this is usually a natural and
effortless process while the second language is the language one acquires after the first
language, and this acquisition is usually a challenging process.
5. What happens after a language comes into contact with another?
ANS: In many other cases, contact between speakers occurs but the lasting effects on the
language are less visible; they may, however, include loan words, calques or other types of
borrowed material.
Task 2: SPRINGBOARD ACTIVITY: Instruction: Study the following words. Which spelling is
