Lesson Nouns

Nouns refer to people, places, things or ideas. There are several types of nouns including proper nouns, which label specific names, and common nouns, which label general people or things. Nouns can also be singular or plural, countable or uncountable. Singular nouns refer to one thing while plural nouns refer to more than one. Countable nouns can be counted and take plural forms like -s or -es, while uncountable nouns like liquids or abstract concepts cannot be counted.

Noun is a word that refers to a places, people, things, or ideas.


Types of nouns:
1. Proper Nouns label specific or tell us about the name of people, places, things. Capitalize the
first letter in the proper nouns.

2. Common Nouns are used to label general people, places, things.

3. Collective Nouns:
Collective noun refers to the word group of people, things, animals.

Singular noun: refer to thing that is only one.
A park
A mouse

Plural noun: refer to the things that consist of more than one.
1. We add -s to most singular nouns to make them plural.

2. We add -es to the singular noun to make it plural.

A watch> three watches
A box> five boxes
A bus> 10 buses
A beach> beaches
A church> churches
A brush> brushes
A Flash>flashes
3. The nouns that end in y, we change -y to ies.
A party > parties
Library > libraries
Fly> flies
Lady>ladies
Lorry> lorries
4. Noun that has a vowel + y; just add -s.
A boy> boys
A key> keys
A Toy> toys
A Tray> trays
A trolley> trolleys
5. Nouns end in f/fe, change f/fe to -ves
Wife> wives
Wolf>wolves
Thief> thieves
Knife>knives
Life > lives
Yourself > yourselves
6. Nouns that end in -o, we add -s (sometimes we add -es)

10. Countable Nouns:
A count noun refers to all the nouns that can be counted.
Singular - Plural
A chair-two chairs, three chairs
A pen- 10 pens, 5 books
A bag- 100 bags
A student- 15 students
A book- 50 books
A bike- 3 bikes
A pencil- five pencils
A count noun can precede with a+ consonant / an + vowel or one in the
singular.
It can take a final -s/-es in the plural.
My brother has his own pencils.
11. Uncountable Nouns/ mass noun/noncount noun: can’t be
counted.
Rice
Money: 1000 Riels/ 100 Baths/ 10 dollars
Water
Sugar
Hair
Salt
Milk
It can’t precede with a / an / one
It has no plural form, so it does not add a final -s/-es.

1. Liquid/ Fluid: water/ coffee/ tea/ milk/ blood/ gasoline…


2. Solid/ food: ice/ bread/ butter/ cheese/ meat…
3. Material: gold/ silver/ wood/ cotton/ glass…
4. Particles: rice/ grass/salt/ dust/ chalk/ bread …
5. Abstraction: (no physical form): music/ intelligence/ news/ beauty/
knowledge/ information
6. Phenomeno of nature: thunder/ lightning/ sunshine/ wind/ rain
7. Diseases: monkey pox/ chicken pox/ cancer/ flu
8. Language: Khmer/ Chinese/ English/ Japanese

You can make uncountable noun to be counted:


A cup of tea- two cups of tea
A bottle of water- 5 bottles of water
A piece of paper- 3 pieces of paper
A tube of toothpaste- many tubes of toothpaste
