Introduction
The verb is the part of speech by which the user of the language proclaims or asserts a
classification and denotes action. One of its properties, the tense of the verb, has 4
classifications: simple tense, present perfect tense, past perfect tense, future perfect tense.
This intervention material will help you in studying the tenses of the verb with the given
activities and exercises. Enjoy studying!

Verb Tenses
Simple Tense
The verb in the present perfect tense is formed by the use of:
1. Has or have with the past participle.
2. Has been or have been with the –ing form of the verb.
Time expressions used with the present perfect tense are already, just, yet (for negative) and
time phrases that begin with either, for, or since.
The past perfect tense is formed by using had + the past participle of the verb (had+ V-ed/V-
en)
The past perfect tense (or had tense) denotes an action which was completed before another
past action occurred or was done.
The time expressions used are the following:
A phrase introduced by before or by
A clause which begins with before, by the time, when
Future Perfect Tense
The future perfect tense is also called shall/will have tense. It is formed by the helping
verbs will have or shall have plus the past participle of the main verb.
The future perfect tense denotes an action that will be completed before a definite time in the
future or before another future action takes place.
The time expressions used are:
A phrase that begins with by or before
A clause that begins with by the time, when or before. The verbs in the time clause are in the
present tense.
Enrichment
When the cast and crew of the play arrived at the theater for their afternoon show,
they already (eat) their lunch. The actors (prepare) their costumes for the different scenes.
They (master) their lines. The stage manager (check) the stage and the props. The director
(give) his pep talk. The crew (buy) what they needed. They (do) all of these before they
arrived at the theater.
