Grammar:
Verb Tense

Introduction

The verb is the part of speech by which the user of the language proclaims or asserts a
classification and denotes action. One of its properties, the tense of the verb, has 4
classifications: simple tense, present perfect tense, past perfect tense, future perfect tense.
This intervention material will help you in studying the tenses of the verb with the given
activities and exercises. Enjoy studying!

Objectives:
1. Identify the different tense of the verb.
2. Supply the correct form of the verb in given sentences.

Verb Tenses

 Simple Tense

Simple Tenses Form of the Verb Time Expression


Present Singular: use the –s form. Those which express

Past Regular: use –ed. Those which suggest time in

 Present Perfect Tense

The present perfect tense is used to indicate action that:


1. Begins in the past and continues to the present.
2. Has just been completed at the time of speaking.

The verb in the present perfect tense is formed by the use of:
1. Has or have with the past participle.
2. Has been or have been with the –ing form of the verb.
Time expressions used with the present perfect tense are already, just, yet (for negative) and
time phrases that begin with either, for, or since.

 Past Perfect Tense

The past perfect tense is formed by using had + the past participle of the verb (had+ V-ed/V-
en)
The past perfect tense (or had tense) denotes an action which was completed before another
past action occurred or was done.
The time expressions used are the following:
A phrase introduced by before or by
A clause which begins with before, by the time, when
 Future Perfect Tense

The future perfect tense is also called shall/will have tense. It is formed by the helping
verbs will have or shall have plus the past participle of the main verb.
The future perfect tense denotes an action that will be completed before a definite time in the
future or before another future action takes place.
The time expressions used are:
A phrase that begins with by or before
A clause that begins with by the time, when or before. The verbs in the time clause are in the
present tense.

Directions: Fill in the blanks with the present perfect tense form of the appropriate verb from

C. Past Perfect Tense


Directions: Transform the following verb into past perfect tense to complete the paragraph
below.

When the cast and crew of the play arrived at the theater for their afternoon show,
they already (eat) their lunch. The actors (prepare) their costumes for the different scenes.
They (master) their lines. The stage manager (check) the stage and the props. The director
(give) his pep talk. The crew (buy) what they needed. They (do) all of these before they
arrived at the theater.

D. Future Perfect Tense


Directions: Complete each sentence with the future perfect tense of the verb.

1. I (review) my notes before the test.


2. He (finish) the painting by December.
3. Gina (read) the notes before Monday comes.
4. Joji (transfer) to another house when summer ends.

Evaluation

Directions: Complete the following sentences with the correct tense of the verb. The given
time expression will guide you.
