Past Simple

We use past simple to talk about:

1-past actions which happened one immediately after the other.


2-past habit or state.(used to+infinitive)
3-complete past action/event which happened at a stated past time.
4-complete past action/event which happened at a stated or implied time reference.
5-an action which interrupts another past action in progress.

Structure:

Affirmative: - regular: Subject+ Verb(d-ed-ied)


- Irregular: they are variable and must be learnt by heart.

Negative: - didn’t (infinitive)

Interrogative: -Did +subject+v(infinitive)…………..?

Time Expressions: yesterday


Last week/month etc
(how long) ago
Al principio o al final pero nunca en medio
Then
When
In (year) ,etc.
Auxiliaries:
Be: I/she/he/it was/wasn’t Was +subject+………….?
You/they/we were/weren’t Were+ subject+…………?

e.g.I was (be); she wasn’t(not/be);they were (be);We weren’t(not/be)

Have: didn’t have Did +subject+have…………...……?

Do: did/didn’t Did+subject+do………..………….?

III-B- Complete with the Simple Past of the verb to have.

IV-Make simple past negative sentences:

1- I took my pet to the vet. I did not take my pet to the vet
2- I told my teacher the whole truth. I did not tell my teacher the whole

3- We liked the party. We did not like the party
4- He cooked the beef and it was Delicious He did not cook the beef and it
was Delicious
5- They played tennis. They did not play tennis
6- We spoke English. We did not speak English
7- She chatted to her sister. She did not chat to her sister
8- My dad taught US studies. My dad did not think US studies

V- Circle the correct form:

1- I break / broke my mobile yesterday.


2- Gail did not play / played football this morning.
3- I work / worked last Friday late.
4- I didn't know / knew what to say. I was completely puzzled.
5- Ann didn't feel / felt well, she was coughing all night.
6- Carmen didn't see / saw Sam at the new year’s party. She was sad.

11-I was watching TV when I heart a strange noise.
12-My grandfather didn’t meet Roosevelt.
13-The man I saw in the tube was my teacher of maths.
14-They didn’t believe me when I told them that I met Hanna Mantana.

VII- Make simple past questions with what, who, when and where:

4-Where did they go last Sunday? We went to the cinema last Sunday.
5-What did the baby break? The baby broke a cup.
6- Where did your mum stay yesterday? Mum stayed at home all day
yesterday.
7- When did Annie get up yesterday? Yesterday Annie got up at 6:30 as
usual.

VIII- Write five things that you didn't do yesterday.

DIFFERENCE IN USE BETWEEN PAST SIMPLE AND PRESENT PERFECT

Present perfect:

-Complete past actions connected to the present with stated or


unstated time reference.

1-They have gone to Italy.(unstated time-we don’t know when they went –
they are still staying there)

2-I have met Jane in the club this morning.(stated time-it’s still morning-
action connected to the present)

3-My father has spoken to the president.(he’s still alive- action connected
to the present)

Past simple:
-Complete past actions not connected to the present with a stated or
implied time reference.

1-They went to Italy last year.(stated time-when? last year)

2-I met Jane in the club.(implied time-when? when she was there)

3- My father spoke to Winston Churchill.(action not connected to the


present-
Winston Churchill is dead)
