Assignment #2 CAE Model For A Mechanical Assembly in SolidWorks
Assignment #2 CAE Model For A Mechanical Assembly in SolidWorks
Objectives:
1) Create parts and assembly in SolidWorks.
2) Try Sheet Metal in SolidWorks.
3) Create part and assembly drawings.
4) Use SolidWorks Standard Toolbox and Connectors.
5) Prepare Bill of Materials (BoM).
6) Use configurations in part modelling.
7) Try SolidWorks Motion and SimulationXpress studies.
Toggle-Clamp Assembly
1) Create a set of detail and assembly drawings for the following toggle-clamp assembly by
using the part drawing and by following the steps below. All dimensions are in inches.

Step 1: Follow the steps in the document “Assignment #2_Sheet Metal Training.docx” copied to
MOODLE to make Part (a). Also prepare the part drawing like the one presented in the coming
pages and its flat drawing as per the above-mentioned training document.
Step 2: Make parts (b) to (g) in SolidWorks by using the following materials. Prepare the
drawing like the ones presented in the coming pages.
Martial for Parts (a), (b) and (d): AISI 1045 cold drawn steel
Martial for Parts (c), (e) and (f): Aluminum 6061-T6
Martial for Parts (g): Brass (press fit to part (a) but close running for part (f), add tolerances in
the drawing
Step 3: Follow the steps in the document “Assignment #2_ Assembly Modeling.docx” copied to
MOODLE to assemble the parts by using the appropriate mates and the following fasteners (See
the document given in Step 7 below for using Toolbox):
- Clevis pin F1/4” Qty 2 to assemble part (e) to parts (g) and (d) and corresponding
narrow Flat Washers Type A
- Round-Head Bolt #10 (Qty 2) and F1/4” (Qty 1) with appropriate Hex Nuts to assemble
parts (c) to (d) and part (d) to part (a), respectively.
Step 4: Add a base plate 1 x 5 x 6.5 inches and fasten the toggle clamp by using four
Countersunk Oval-Head Machine Screws F1/4” Qty 4.
Step 5: Create two configurations for parts (e) and design this part by using steel sheet metal
(AISI 1045 cold drawn). Combine parts (c) and (d) into one part made of sheet metal and save it
as a new part (h).
Step 6: Create Exploded Assembly and Bill of Materials (BoM) for the two configurations (Plain
parts (e) and (c) / Combined parts made of sheet metals). Export the BoM into a MS-Excel file.
Step 7: Run SolidWorks Motion to analyse the motion of part (c) and perform Collision
Detection Analysis in the parts motions as per example given in the document “Assignment #2_
Motion Analysis & Design Library.docx” copied to MOODLE.
- Determine the relation between the horizontal movement of part (b) with the rotation of
parts (c) and (d) around the lower pin in part (d).
- What is the required force that must be applied to part (c) to open the clamp if a horizonal
clamping force (compressive) of 250 pounds needs to be applied in the internal hole areas of
part (b)?
Step 8: Run SolidWorks Simulation for the 2nd configuration under static clamping force and
calculate the factor of safety (FOS) used in the design of each part. Fix the bottom of base plate,
use standard mesh size, and simulate the pins, bolts and screw as standard connections in
SolidWorks Simulation.
Redesign the over- and under-designed parts by changing their geometry and/or their materials
for a factor of safety not more than 4.
