Look at the image, this image portrays the rich and the poor and this has something to do with the next theory A
Marxist critic grounds theory and practice on the economic and cultural theory of Karl Marx and Friedrich
Engels. This school of critical theory focuses on power and money in works of literature. Who has the
power/money? Who does not? What happens as a result?
Now, what do you think is the advantage of this approach?
The advantage of this is it show how texts can be a benefit of social change either by illustrating the ills of
society and/or creating a solution to the problem
Now, who among you is familiar with the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins?
That’s good!
the Hunger Games provides a great lens through which to examine facets of our present capitalist system. The
Hunger Games provides a very clear intersection between class, race, gender, and political power while also
examining land relations.
Now, here are some critical questions that can aid you in using this literary approach:
ÿ What is the economic status of the characters? (This is important since Marxism
focuses on the status of the people or where class they belong to)
ÿ What happens to them as a result of this status?
ÿ How do they fare against economic and political odds?
ÿ What other conditions stemming from their class does the writer emphasize? (e.g.,
poor education, poor nutrition, poor health care, inadequate opportunity)
ÿ To what extent does the work fail by overlooking the economic, social and political
implications of its material?
ÿ In what other ways does economic determinism affect the work? How should readers
consider the story in today’s modern economic setting (nationally, globally, etc.)?
