Additional Design requirements

Requirements Description

7.5 Corrosion allowance - For carbon steel wetted surfaces (Nozzle connections and covers
without corrosion resistant materials, lining or weld overlay) a
minimum of 3mm CA
- Weld overlay (in case) a depth of at least 1.5mm from the finished
surface
7.6 Components g) end plates may be reinforced with stiffeners or added thickness,
when necessary, for vacuum or other design conditions.
7.6.4 Carrying bar c) the carrying bar, guide bar and heat transfer plates shall be
designed to limit the lateral and vertical movement of the plate pack
to align the gaskets and prevent snaking of the plate pack.
7.6.8 drip tray (if Detail of design for drip tray (min 5mm clearance between of the
necessary) plate pack and the top of the drip tray. Min 25mm deep, and min
50mm wider and longer than the plate pack max capacity)

type (lined/overlay and unlined)
- Where flanged connections are used, a weld neck flange type shall
be used.
- Slip-on or lap joint connections may only be used if agreed by the
purchaser, but shall not be used in cyclic, sour, or wet hydrogen
sulfide service.

7.8 Plate gaskets

When the gasket material has not been specified by the purchaser, the vendor
shall recommend a gasket material for the purchaser’s acceptance and
approval based on the operating conditions and fluid compositions.

The purchaser shall specify the compositions of the fluids, including any trace
components which may affect the gasket selection, as well as any alternate
operating conditions (e.g. chemical cleaning, flushing, or upset operation)
which are to be considered.

A.3.10 Guidance to 7.8

A.3.10.1 A good reason to avoid copy gaskets from Non-OEM makers
A correctly designed gasket must exert a minimum sealing force to prevent leakage, while at the same time
avoiding high forces which can result in damage to the gasket and gasket grooves.

To obtain optimum performance, it is important that the heat transfer plate and gasket are designed together.
Gasket profiles should be matched to the heat transfer plates that they are intended to be used on.
A “one size fits all” philosophy adds risks to the design with respect to premature leakage, gasket damages
or misaligned plate packs.

The tolerances for the gasket widths and other gasket properties like hardness etc. are proprietary
information of the vendor.

A.3.10 Guidance to 7.8

A.3.10.7 Guidance on the use of glue-free gaskets compared with glued-on gaskets

Glued-on Gaskets Glue –free gaskets

Good for frequent disassembly for Easier serviceability / elimination of

cleaning (hydro-blasting) shipping adhesives
Improved resistance to gasket If glue materials are not compatible with
displacement (upset process conditions) the process fluid
Helps gasket to keep the shape when in high temperature applications [over
there is a risk of swelling (chemical) 140 °C], a glued gasket can be more
likely to experience a crushing effect,
especially if using crush-sensitive
materials (e.g. hydrogenated NBR);
To avoid contamination by particulates In remote areas (for quick servicing)
(becoming wedged between gasket
grooves)

A.3.10.8 Gluing technique is very important and use of reliable gluing systems are required
especially if the heat transfer plates are to be cleaned using hydro-blasting.
