110 ELECTRICAL MOTOR CONTROLS
in not energized. This allows any air in the cylinder to ex-
hhaust (pneumatic system), oF any ol inthe eylinder to re
turn to the reservoir (hydraulic system).
‘Three-way valves may also be normally open. A nor-
mally-open valve allows pressurized fluid to flow
through it in the normal (spring) position, The 3-way
valve is @ solenoid-operated, spring-return valve. The
spring position is the normal position any time the sole~
noid is not energized. The valve changes position and
does not allow the pressurized fluid to flow when the
solenoid is energized, The pressurized fluid from the
circuit is connected to the outlet (exhaust) port. The
valve returns to the spring position and the pressurized
fluid is allowed to flow through the valve when the so-
lenoid is de-energized.
Four-Way Valve Applications. Four-way valves are used
to control double-acting cylinders and reversible fluid
power motors, A double-acting cylinder is a cylinder that
requires fluid pressure to advance and retract the cylinder:
A fluid power motor isa device that converts fluid energy
into rotary mechanical motion. Four-way valves have four
(or five) ports located on the valve, See Figure 6-26. One
port is connected to the pressurized fluid, (wo ports are
used as the outlet ports, and one (or two) ports are used as
the exhaust (or tank) ports, The two outlet ports are con-
nected toa double-acting cylinder or reversible fluid power
‘motor, Only one tank (drain) port is normally used if the
valve is controlling oil. Either one exhaust (single exhaust)
‘or two exhaust (dual exhaust) ports are used if the valve i
‘controlling air. A four-way, two-position, double-solenoid
valve may be used to control a standard hyctraulie eylin-
der, See Figure 6-27.
‘When PBI is momentarily pressed, the valve spool
in the solenoid valve is shifted so that the fluid is di-
rected to the back side of the cylinder piston, causing,
it to move forward. The piston continues to travel 10
its full extension or until it stalls against the work itis
performing,
When PB2 is momentarily pressed, the valve spool in
the solenoid valve shifts tothe opposite direction so that
the fluid is directed to the front side of the cylinder, caus-
ing the piston to move backward. Note: Coils and
pushbuttons should be wired so that they are interlocked.
Failure to do so results in coil burnout, Reversal can be
made to take place at any point in the piston cycle with
the piston still moving. The unit cannot, however, be
stopped in either direction part-way through a stroke and
held there.

Direct-acting, two-way valves are common in reftigera-
‘ion equipment. See Figure 6-28. Two-way (shutofD) valves
ave one inlet and one outlet pipe connection. These
Units may be constructed as normally open (NO), where
the valve is open when de-energized and closed when
energized, or they may be constructed as normally closed
