Lesson Plan Weather Temperature

The lesson plan is for a 1st grade science class on weather. It includes 3 key parts: 1. The students will activate their prior knowledge about weather and be introduced to thermometers. They will learn that thermometers can measure outdoor temperature. 2. The students will participate in a hands-on activity using thermometers in cups of hot and cold water to observe how temperature affects the thermometer. They will then do a carousel activity reinforcing the vocabulary. 3. To conclude, the teacher will review what was learned about using thermometers to measure weather and preview the next lesson where students will use a thermometer outside and record data in their weather books.

Lesson Planning Framework

Subject Area: Science – Weather Grade Level: 1st grade

GMercyU Student Name: McKendra Mount

Domain I: Planning and Preparation

PA Core/Academic Standard(s):
3.3.A. Earth and Space Sciences
3.3.1. A5. Become familiar with weather instruments.
Collect, describe, and record basic information about weather over time.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Big Idea: Overarching Theme
o Properties of the Earth and atmosphere can be measured.

Essential Question(s):
Students will consider and reflect on throughout the lesson:
o How can technology be used to collect data about weather conditions?
o How can we use weather data to predict weather patterns?

Objective/Performance Expectations
What will students know and be able to do as a result of this lesson?
o Students will be able to collect information about the weather and climate through the
use of a thermometer.

Assessment Evidence/Level of Learning Differentiated Instruction:

Students will show what they know by evidence Modifications in instruction and
of/list names of formative or summative checks, assessment for students with learning
quizzes, tests which indicate evidence of learning: differences, specifically those with 504’s
 Students will complete a lab sheet during and IEP’s.
our thermometer lab. I will know that they  There are no students in the class
understand the material when looking at with an IEP or 504’s. There are
their lab sheet. I will also assess their two students in the class who need
weather books over the course of the to be refocused. There are pictures
couple weeks that we work on them. on their desks that symbolize they
need to refocus on the lesson
when I point to them. The
kinesthetic students will benefit
from walking around during the
carousel. Visual students will
benefit from the activity using the
1
thermometer. The auditory
learners will benefit from our
discussions.

Domain II Classroom Environment: Refer to Classroom/Behavior Management Plan

Domain III: Instruction

Motivation/Prior Knowledge:
Preparing students for the lesson: How will you activate prior knowledge, build background, or
review previous lessons?
1. To motivate students, I will have thermometers out on a desk which will create curiosity
2. To activate prior knowledge, I will ask the students what the weather is like today.
3. We will discuss if it is hot or cold and I will ask the students if they have ever heard of a
thermometer before.
4. I will explain that we will talk about a thermometer today and give a brief definition.
5. I will make the connection between when they get their temperature taken when they
are sick and explain that there is a different kind of thermometer that can tell the
weathers temperature.

Materials Needed:
1. Weather book
2. Lab sheet
3. Thermometers (for weather and temperature example)
4. Pencil
5. Red crayons
6. Cups of water

Vocabulary/ New or Review:

Thermometer
Weather

Sequence the Lesson:

What learning activities/strategies will you use to engage the students in the learning? What
will students do to use and apply new concepts or skills (independent practice if relevant)?
How will you monitor and guide their performance? Include relevant vocabulary. (Please use
bullets to sequence your lesson.)
6. I will activate knowledge and build background knowledge
a. To activate prior knowledge, I will ask the students what the weather is like
today.
b. We will discuss if it is hot or cold and I will ask the students if they have ever
heard of a thermometer before.
c. I will explain that we will talk about a thermometer today and give a brief
definition.
d. I will make the connection between when they get their temperature taken when
they are sick and explain that there is a different kind of thermometer that can
tell the weathers temperature.
2
7. I will pass around a thermometer so that everyone can see it.
8. I will show a Slideshow that explains how we can measure weather and that there are
many different ways but today we will focus on using a thermometer.
9. I will explain that for the next couple weeks we will be measuring the weather. We will
leave a thermometer outside and each day we will go outside and measure the weather
using the thermometer. We will also be filling in and answering additional questions
pertaining to the weather.
a. Some example questions:
i. Is the sun out today?
ii. Are there clouds in the sky?
iii. What kind of clothes could you wear today?
10. To begin I will show how a thermometer works. I will demonstrate that a thermometer’s
line will rise when it is hot, and it will stay low when it is cold.
a. To demonstrate this, I will separate the students into groups and each group will
have a cup with cold water and a cup with warm/hot water. Each group will be
given a thermometer and they will put it into one cup at a time and watch the
line go up or down. They will have a lab sheet where they will record what the
water feels like and if the line goes up or down.
11. After this activity, we will do a carousel.
a. There will be posters around the room with words such as weather,
thermometer, and measure.
b. I will split the students up into groups and they will walk around and write or
draw pictures on the posters of what they learned about the word. I will give
each group a few minutes to complete this because they will be larger groups.
c. After each group goes around and writes things down, I will give time for the
groups to walk around and read the completed posters.
12. To close the lesson, I will bring the class back together.
a. So, today we learned that we could measure the weather with a tool called a
thermometer. We got to see how a thermometer works and we got to use it
inside of our classroom and outside. Can someone remind me what happened to
our thermometers when we put them in hot water? What about when we put
them in cold water?
b. I will also ask questions such as:
i. Who can remind me what we can use a thermometer for?
ii. What are some things that you learned about thermometers or weather?
c. To preview the next lesson, I will explain that I will be putting the thermometer
out overnight and tomorrow we will begin our first page of our weather book
and will get the chance to use the thermometer for the first time outside.
Closure: What will you do to bring closure to the lesson? How will you summarize this
lesson and preview the lesson that will follow?
