Brake Pressure - Test

SMCS - 4250-081

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system on this

machine after the engine and pump have been stopped. Serious injury
can result if this pressure is not released before any service is done on
the hydraulic systems. In order to prevent possible injury, release the
hydraulic system pressure before working on any fitting, hose, or
hydraulic component.

Lower all attachments to the ground before service is started. If the

hydraulic system must be serviced, tested, or adjusted with the
attachment in the raised position, the attachments and lift cylinders
must be supported properly.

Always move the machine to a location away from the travel of other
machines. Be sure that other personnel are not near the machine when
the engine is running and tests or adjustments are being made.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during

performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Introduction
The following test will determine if the pressure of the oil that is delivered to the service brakes from the
brake valve is within the specified limit. Also, this test will determine whether the oil pressure to the
brakes decreases to the specified limit when the brakes are activated.

Also, the test for brake lubrication is included in this story.

Test Preparation (Brake Actuation Pressure)

1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location.

2. Lower all the implements.

3. Shut off the engine.

4. Turn the key to the ON position. Make sure that the implement lockout switch is turned to the
UNLOCKED position. Move the implement control levers to all positions several times to release
any pressure in the hydraulic system.

5. Locate pressure port (B1). This pressure tap is on the brake manifold mounted to the bevel gear case
and can be accessed at the rear of the machine.

6. Attach Tooling (A) to pressure tap (B1).

Test Procedure (Brake Actuation Pressure)

The following test procedure will determine if the pressure of the oil that is delivered from the brake valve
is within the specified limit.

1. Start the engine. Warm the power train oil to a temperature of 84° ± 8°C (183° ± 14°F).

2. Operate the engine at LOW IDLE. Make sure that the parking brake is in the OFF position.

3. Check the pressure at Tooling (A). The pressure at Tooling (A) should be 2400 ± 187 kPa
(348 ± 27 psi).

4. Operate the engine at HIGH IDLE. Make sure that the parking brake is in the OFF position.

5. Check the pressure at Tooling (A). Refer to Table 1 for correct pressure for certain machines.

6. The pressure at Tooling (A) should be less than 70 kPa (10 psi) when the parking brake or the
service brake is engaged.

Test Preparation (Right Brake Actuation Pressure)
