CRITICAL JOURNAL REVIEW

In this study, the reviewer tries to review three journals of Politeness:

1. J1 = Teacher’s Politeness in EFL Class (Ayfer Sulu, 2015)
2. J2 = The Study of EFL Students’ Requests Based on Politeness Theory (Azadeh
Elmianvari, 2013)
3. J3 = A Study on Politeness Teaching to English Learners in China (Wilma O’Sullivan,
2007)
These three journals focus on politeness in the process of teaching and learning

English as a foreign language. The journals have similar topic of which is about politeness.

The theory of politeness is adopted from Brown’s and Levinson’s theory. The three journals

have the same perception that politeness is very important because it is a fundamental part of

culture which shapes human behavior within a society. The journals try to explore the practice

of politeness which was done by teachers and students. The practice of politeness by teachers

was observed in terms of greeting, giving instruction, giving motivation, giving evaluation,

and managing the class in the teaching-learning process. The practice of politeness by

students was observed in terms of getting attention, requesting, and thanking. The three

journals use class observation as the method in conducting research. Each journal has some

strengths and weakness.

Journal 1

The journal 1 has some strength; those are as follows.

 This journal observed interaction between students and teacher when conducting the

research; it did not just observe the teacher, so the researcher knows well about the

interaction; how teacher applies politeness in teaching and how students respond the

politeness in learning process.

 This journal shows readers the effect of politeness in the process of teaching and learning

English as a foreign language, so it is not about the theory, but also the positive effect of

applying the politeness in the process of teaching and learning English as a foreign

language.

The weakness of journal 1 is as follow.

 This journal has expired references since it used old journals as its references which were

published more than ten years before it. It should use current journals as references.

Journal 2

The strength of journal 2 is as follow.

 This journal applies theory of politeness to the participants’ e-mail requests by

considering three factors; those are: formality of address phrase, degree of imposition,

and directness.

The weakness of journal 2 is as follow.

 This journal focuses on pragmatic and politeness features, and the researcher tried to

overlook all grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors and kept in mind that the

requests are coming from a foreigner, grammatical and pragmatic features are integrated

and cannot really be separable in email request analysis.

Journal 3

The strength of journal 3 is as follow.

 This journal realizes that politeness cannot be separated from culture and appropriate

norms; a clear indication of the importance of cultural and context awareness in teaching

and learning English as a foreign language.

The weakness of journal 3 are as follows.

 This journal has only touched the tip of the iceberg about politeness.

 This journal needs to give more explanation about the analysis of examples that it gives.
