The lesson that we will be tackling today is


about Work. And our goal is to identify
situations in which work is done and which no
work is done.

To begin with, let me introduce first our


learning objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students should be


able to:

1. Define work in physics.


2. Distinguish situations in which work is done
and in which no work is done.
3. Explain if work is done in a given situations.

Work
What comes to your mind when you hear the
word work? Yes Ms. Inidal? I always expect work as a job ma’am.

Work have different meaning to different
people. For some, doing some tasks such as
construction, typing on a keyboard, driving a
bus, teaching a class, cooking food, treating
patients or doing something to earn money is
Work. These examples define work as a task
done by exerting efforts.

But class! In physics, the definition of work


reveals its relationship to energy—whenever
work is done, energy is transferred. Work is the
result when a force is applied to an object
which causes change in its motion and
produces displacement.

Again class, what is displacement from our


previous lesson? Anyone? Yes Sahliha? Ma’am, displacement is defined as the change
in position of an object.

3 tips to check and must take place for work to


be done.

1. A force must be applied to an object


2. The object must move (occurs displacement)
3. The object must move in the same direction
as the force (parallelism of directions)

And if one of these is missing, No work is


being done.

Let’s go back to the 3 situations you have


guessed earlier,

Now class, is there work done? Yes ma’am. There is work being done ma’am.

Yes, very good! There is work being done.


Because there is an exertion of force, the object
has moved, and the object moved in the same
direction as the force I have exerted.

There is no work done ma’am.
Very good! There is no work being done
because though I have exerted a strong force
but then the object does not move.

Okay! Let’s proceed…


(3. I will carry a bag)
Now class, is there work done? There is no work being done ma’am.

Very good! There is no work being done


because the bag was carried vertically, but the
displacement occurred horizontally.
though I have exerted a force and the bag has
moved but then it does not follow the
parallelism of the directions.

Clear? Yes ma’am.

Now class! Let’s test your brain to measure if


you can identify situations which work is done
and in which no work is done. Let us have an
activity.

This activity is called, Is there work done?

To start with the activity, let us have 4


grouping first. Let’s count, 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3

Okay! Group 1 will be assigned here, group 2


group 3 and then group 4.
You may now go to your group.

I have 4 situations here for you to identify


which work is done and which no work is
done.

Whatever situation you are assigned. You have


to brainstorm with your group mates and
choose 1 representative to present your answer.

Anyways, It’s not that difficult because you


have only two questions to answer:
1. Is there work done?
2. How do you say so?
