SECTION-B
2 (a) Hundred kilograms per hour of an ethanol/methanol stream is to be separated in a CO2 05
distillation column. The feed consists of 40% ethanol and the distillate is made up
of 90% methanol. Eighty percent of the methanol is to be recovered as distillate.
Determine the percent methanol in the bottom product.

(c) A stream of aqueous hydrochloric acid, that is, 57.3 wt% HCl is mixed with pure CO2 05
water in a stirred vessel to produce a stream of 16.5% acid. What ratio of water to
concentrated acid should be used?

3 (a) The specific gravity of gasoline is approximately 0.7. What is the mass (kg) of 10 CO1 05
L of gasoline?

(b) Explain the concept of Basis in process calculation. Write down the criterial for CO1 05
basis.
