Hydraulics I

Assignment

1) Show that the pressure at a point in an inviscid fluid is independent of direction

2) A manometer connected to a pipe indicates a negative gage pressure of 60 mm of
mercury. What is the absolute pressure in pipe, if the atmosphere pressure is
101kPa?
3) Suppose a 60.0-kg woman floats in fresh water with 97.0% of her volume
submerged when her lungs are full of air. What is her average density?
4) A conical pointed shaft turns in a conical bearing with a angular velocity . The
gap between the shaft and bearing is filled with an oil of viscosity and the
distance between these two is h . Obtain an expression for the shear stress that acts
on the surface of the conical shaft. Calculate the viscous torque that acts on the shaft

5) The water in a tank is pressurized by air, and the pressure is measured by a

multifluid manometer as shown in the Figure below. Determine the gage pressure of
air in the tank if h1 0.2 m, h2 0.3 m, and h3 0.46 m. Take the densities of water, oil,
and mercury to be 1000 kg/m3 , 850 kg/m3 , and 13,600 kg/m3 , respectively

6) An 80-cm-high fish tank of cross section 2 m * 0.6 m that is initially filled with
water is to be transported on the back of a truck as shown below. The truck
accelerates from 0 to 90 km/h in 10 s. If it is desired that no water spills during
acceleration, determine the allowable initial water height in the tank. Would you
recommend the tank to be aligned with the long or short side parallel to the
direction of motion?
7) In the Figure shown below Gate AB is 4 ft wide and is hinged at A. Gage G reads —
2.17 psi, and oil of specific gravity 0.750 is in the right-hand tank. What horizontal
force must be applied at B for equilibrium of gate AB?

8) A rectangular sluice gate is fitted at the base of a reservoir wall with a pivot in the
arrangement shown in Figure below. The gate is designed to regulate the level of
water in the reservoir by opening when the water level to the right, h, reaches a
certain depth. The gate has a width of 1.2m and its centre of gravity is 0.3m from the
wall. Determine the weight, W, of the gate, if a water level of h = 2.779m will just
cause the gate to open.
9) A Venturi meter is being used to measure flow in a pipeline of diameter 250mm
which Carries water. When the pressure difference between the throat and the
entrance of the Venturi meter is 300mm on a mercury manometer; determine the
flow in the pipeline. The Venturi meter has a throat diameter of 80mm and a
coefficient of discharge of 0.97. The relative density of mercury is 13.6.
