7 Self-Organizing Network(SON) Function

7.1 What is the SON?

 Self-Organizing Networking (SON) is a feature that breaks through the product limitations and realizes
auto-discovery, auto-networking and auto-configuration between routers, switches, and wireless APs without
the need for controllers or Internet access. Users can quickly complete the device deployment and
configuration, remote management, operation and maintenance of the entire network with Ruijie Cloud App,
which greatly reduces the investment of equipment cost, labor cost and time cost in the process of wireless
network construction.

7.2 How many devices can a self-organizing network support?

The number of devices that can be managed in the SON depends on the maximum number of devices that the
master device supports to manage.

(1) When EG acts as the Master:

Management capacity
Model
AC Mode Gateway mode

RG-EG105G 300 32

RG-EG105G-P 300 32

EG105G-V2 300 32

EG105G-P-V2 300 32

RG-EG105GW NA 32

RG-EG210G-P 500 150

EG210G-E 500 150

(2) When NBS switch acts as the Master: the maximum management capacity is 150.

(3) When Reyee AP acts as the Master:

Model Management capacity

RAP1200(F)&RAP2200(F) 150

24
Reyee FAQs

Note

● ES switches cannot act as Masters, up to 128 manageable ES switches can be added in a SON.

7.3 What is the priority of the Master Election of Self-Organizing

Network?

(1) EG(AC mode)>EG(router mode)>AP(router mode)>AP(AP mode)>SW.

(2) Device CPU/Memory/others (AP radio number). Priority: The larger the parameter, the higher the priority.

(3) Same model. Priority: The larger the parameter of MAC address, the higher the priority.

Note

● Ruijie EG3230/3250 and Reyee ES switches cannot act as Masters.

7.4 Which devices cannot act as master in the SON?

 Ruijie EG3230/3250.

 Reyee ES switches.

Reyee FAQs

7.6 How does the SON perform device discovery?

 The device discovery is based on layer 2 broadcast, so all devices should be on the same layer without
VLAN or port isolation.

Note

● The establishment of a SON does not require the device to access to the Internet.

7.7 Will the configuration of SON change if the master is

disconnected?
 Master device will be re-elected after the old Master is disconnected. The configuration does not change
when re-selecting the master.

7.8 How to disable the SON function of device?

(1) Router > Overview > Work mode, click on the "Work Mode" setting button.

26
Reyee FAQs

(2) Disable the "Self-Organizing Network" and click “Save”.

7.9 Does the self-organizing network support the preemption mode?

Preemption means that a new higher priority device is added to a stable network, and the Master will change
accordingly. Typical preemption scenarios:

(1) EG device is added to the RAP networking:

a After the Master is successfully elected, a new EG is added and will become the new Master.

b Preemption time: 7-8s.

(2) RAP device is added to the RAP networking:

a After the Master is successfully elected, the preemption will be delayed if a new RAP with higher
priority is added.

27
Reyee FAQs

b Preemption time: If the boot time of the Master is less than 36 hours and the boot time of the new
device is longer than 5 minutes, preemption will start. Otherwise, preemption will start when the new
device boot time is longer than 30 minutes.

Note

● EG device can only act as the master and cannot be preempted. EG cannot be changed as a slave
device.

7.10 What is the IP address of the master device on the self-organizing

network?
 The IP address of the master device is 10.44.77.253.
