Bandura's Social Learning Theory

Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory proposes that learning occurs through observation, modeling, and imitation. It emphasizes how both environmental and cognitive factors influence human learning and behavior. Bandura's theory expanded on behaviorist ideas by adding that mediating processes occur between stimuli and responses, and that behavior is learned from the environment through observational learning. His theory outlines five key steps in the learning process: paying attention, retention, reproduction, motivation, and learning through observation.

Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory

 Social learning theory, proposed by Albert Bandura, emphasizes the

importance of observing, modelling, and imitating the behaviors, attitudes,
and emotional reactions of others. Social learning theory considers how
both environmental and cognitive factors interact to influence human
learning and behavior.

 In social learning theory, Albert Bandura (1977) agrees with the behaviorist
learning theories of classical conditioning and operant conditioning.
However, he adds two important ideas:

1. Mediating processes occur between stimuli & responses.

2. Behavior is learned from the environment through the process of
observational learning.

Bandura’s 5 key steps of the learning process

Learning through observation

- social learning theory is that we observe certain behaviours

1.Paying Attention
- Being focused on the task at hand becomes the first step for retaining
the information and getting to acquire the knowledge.

2.Retention
- how well that behaviour is remembered.

3.Reproduction
- having observed, paid attention to and remembered the
behaviour/task, we should be able to perform it ourselves.
4.Motivation
- Motivation could be considered one of the most important principles of
the social learning theory;
