“Excellence is bringing my best with the intent to do better tomorrow.

Excellence is always progressive. My best yesterday should not be my best today.
You should always be improving.”

“Good teams and players give second efforts, great teams give 3rd, 4th, and 5th efforts.”
Tiger Basketball Coaching Philosophy:
Practice Philosophy
- Basketball is a game that requires excellent physical conditioning. During practices, we will strive to do the
majority of this physical conditioning with a basketball in hand, but there will be times when running to get
the team into our best shape will be necessary.
- Practice promotes our work ethic. Practice is really where we will achieve the goals for our program. There
are no shortcuts to success and there is no substitute for hard work. Everything we do in practice is for a
well thought out reason. Our program is progressive and we will build off of each day, striving to be at our
best by the end of the season.
- Practice is a time of preparation and it must be viewed as an opportunity to get better. Our team's chance
for success will directly align with the amount of time that we spend in productive preparation.
- A successful basketball program requires a great deal of sacrifice and cooperation between the players,
parents, and coaches.
- At practice, players will be required to be dressed and ready to go at the designated time. “If you are early,
you are on time. If you are on time, you’re late. If you’re late, you don’t care.”
- Basketball is a game of habits and good practices will build good habits.
Game Philosophy
- Our game philosophy, simply stated, is “Play good defense and take good shots.”
- Defensively, we want to take away what the other team does best. We want to force our opponent to their
secondary offense or place the scoring burden on those who are not used to carrying the scoring load. Good
communication and good rebounding are key parts to good defense.
- Offensively, we want to convert any quick scoring opportunities we may get because of our defense. If the
quick basket is not there, we must be disciplined enough to execute our offense until we can get a high
percentage shot.
Substitution Guidelines
- Whenever you are taken out of a game, it will be for one of the following reasons.
- To give you a rest, To discuss with a coach, To adjust to an opponent, Foul trouble, or Injury
- When you come to the bench, sit beside a coach. We will want to discuss any adjustments that we need to
make either offensively or defensively.

“A player’s goal in every practice should be to improve yourself for the benefit of the team.”
Keys to Success
1. Attitude and Effort
a. Be positive. Negativity will get us nowhere.
b. Never give up. Play to the whistle.
c. Make effort plays like diving on the floor and taking charges.
2. Attention to Details
a. Do the little things and do them well.
i. Box out and attack rebounds
ii. Make free throws.
iii. Make layups.
iv. Defend.
3. Selflessness
a. Be a team player. It is not about you, it is about the TEAM.
4. HAVE FUN!

“The season is a marathon not a sprint. What matters is that our team gets better with each
practice and each game.”
Principles of Defense
1. Maintain proper defensive stance
a. Knees bent, Head up, Hands out (Dig hand & trace hand when on ball)
b. Jump to the ball on EVERY pass and ALWAYS force cutters behind you!
2. Hand in passing lanes
a. Get “Up the Line” and get in passing lanes. Don’t let any pass be easy, but be aware of a
backdoor cut so you don’t get into a poor position.
3. HELP SIDE
a. If you are not guarding the ball or in “denial” of the next pass, you should be in “help side”.
b. “Help Side” should have your feet in the paint and jump to the ball. (This is essential when
lobs are thrown or when someone is beat on a drive) *HELP SIDE HAS TO BE READY TO
TAKE CHARGES!!*
4. Fronting the post
a. We should ALWAYS do our best to guard the post from the front side (If you play behind
you will get beat or get in foul trouble when a post gets the ball.
5. Ball Awareness
a. NEVER turn your back from the ball. You should always be able to “See Ball & Man”
6. PRESSURE
a. Ball pressure is KEY to good defense. You must be aggressive and pressure the ball while
your teammates are “up the line” in passing lanes to force turnovers without fouling.
7. COMMUNICATION
a. Talking with your teammates about who you are guarding, where the ball is, who has help
side, screens, cutters, etc.
8. BOX OUTS
a. Every time a shot goes up, get a body on someone and box out, then attack the rebound
with 2 hands and chin it.
9. TRAPPING
a. We encourage the trap at designated times. Force the ball handler into the trap.
b. When a player “A” leaves to trap, anticipate the next pass to player “A”s person.

“Great defensive teams have five players who play in a defensive stance at all times.”
Principles of Offense
1. “Tiger Break” or “Quick Break”
a. Numbering system: Point Guard (1), Shooting Guards (2 &3), Forward/Center (4), Trailer (5)
i. Point Guard: Best ball handler, leads the team on the court, starts the break.
ii. Shooting Guards: 2nd & 3rd best ball handlers & best shooters, fill lanes.
iii. Forward/Center: Best rebounder, “Rim Runner”, Finish at the hoop.
iv. Trailer: Takes ball out, reads the defense, may spot up, set high ball screen, bust to
backside rebound. Stay active low trying to establish passing lanes and rebounding
position.
2. Play to your strengths.
a. Know yourself as a player and don’t try to do more than you know you are capable of.
b. Ask yourself these questions:
i. What do I do best on offense?
ii. What is my best shot?
iii. What is my shooting range?
iv. How do I like to get into my shot?/How much time do I need to get my shot off?
v. Can I operate effectively in traffic?
vi. What role can I best fill for the good of the team?
3. Have good shot selection. “We want finished shots, NOT just close shots!”
a. 3 Major considerations for good shot selection:
i. Distance from the basket (Closer shots = Higher percentages)
ii. Amount of defensive pressure (Will you have to hurry or adjust?)
iii. Personal Preferences (No hesitation when taking a shot on shots you have mastered &
practiced over & over.)
4. Recognize situations.
a. 2 vs 1, 3 vs 2, 1 vs 1 mismatch, & Any blown defensive assignment
5. Offensive Keys
a. Ball movement
b. Catch in triple threat: Shoot, Drive, Pass
c. Screen & Cut
d. Move & dribble with a purpose!
“Focus on effort and execution. The results will take care of themselves.”
