Introduction :
Private Library:
A private library is a library under the care of private ownership, in contrast to that of a public
institution, and is usually only established for the use of a limited number of people, or even
a single person.
Private libraries often reflect the interests of the owner and the depth of collection in specific
area of interests can go far deeper than the level of collection public libraries can attain.
Almost all early libraries were private or semi-private libraries; the idea of a public library did
not emerge until the middle of nineteenth century. The earliest libraries belonged to kings,
temples, and other individuals and institutions, and were usually restricted to nobility,
aristocracy, scholars, or priests.
Private libraries also served as archives that held documents of royal families, genealogical
charts, private medical records, military histories, and other personal records of the king or
ruler. Private libraries for citizens became possible after the invention of the printing press,
which allowed individuals to develop personal collections
Public Library:
Public Library is defined as a library which is accessible to the public and generally funded
from public source and may be operated by civil servant. Public library, as its name
suggests, it is for the people, by the people and of the people. It exists from civilization of
mankind and act as the important custodian of human culture, knowledge and social
customs Public libraries are constantly serving community functions and are performing
various important roles in educational, economic, political, social and cultural development of
the country.
Educational role of a library can hardly be over-emphasized, both as complementary in
formal education and as the provider of informal education, which are essential for the
development of people. Public library service is necessary for the presentation of universal
literacy. Public library provides the following method to spread education.
• To help the lifelong education on and all to furnish up to date facts and information to one
and all.
• To distribute in an unbiased and balanced way all shades of recorded views and thoughts
to one and as a help in the discharge of their political functions in respect of Local, National
and International affairs.
• To contribute the productivity by informing top management about the latest trends in
diverse enterprises by pleasing back the minds of researchers, scientists and technicians.
• To preserve the literacy remains of humanity for posterity, as vehicle of culture and as a
source material for research to work for all the continued social well being as the agency in
charge of all socialised recorded thoughts.
• To assist people to contribute to the growth of knowledge that such use of knowledge as
will promote personal and social well-being.
• To develop their creative and spiritual capabilities to make them more capable in their daily
occupations to discharge political and social obligations and to become better members of
home and community.
Academic library is the library which is attached to academic institutions like schools,
colleges and universities. An academic library serves more specifically the students,
research scholars, teachers and staff of the academic institution. Main objective of an
academic library is to give maximum learning materials to its clientele so that they may be
fully educated in their respective level. Academic libraries are categorized into school
libraries, college libraries and university libraries
A.School Library:
These are generally the types of libraries that people come across on an everyday basis.
The idea behind each type of library is specific, but at the end of the day, the idea is to
acquire, store, and categorize information according to the convenience of the people who
visit them. So the types of libraries are classed not according to the physical structural
differences between them or the number of books they contain but the type of people they
cater to and the type of information they are supposed to provide to the people who visit.
